View Full Version : So is the GT200-series going to be a disappointment too?
Haven't seen anything amazing or astounding, and I'm starting to question whether this will be just another re-stickering of what Nvidia already has. :o

Yes since faster GPUs wont make up for the fact that CPUs are not growing much...

But we really haven't seen any real tests yet... So who knows? I know it's going to be much faster than my current card, maybe double the speed, but without any solid info, it's hard to tell...

You must have read the rumoured specs already? Not just NV but also ATi's? So I am guessing that pessimism runs amongst the hardware enthusiast? (pb)
The rumoured SPs count on NVs and ATI's new parts are almost double to their current generation....in some cases the new GPUs are paired with more bandwidth!!! That has too mean that performance is going to blow current gen cards out the window? I mean the high end stuff. Yes there has been stagnancy of late but the GT200 and R7700 or whatever are going to be performance wise more than double maybe at certain instances. :D
It seems to me the new GTX280 is gonna be a little faster than the current GX2. The GX2 is cheaper but runs in SLI. The GTX280 isn't SLI but is VERY expencive, hot and power hungry.
I've decided to sit this one out. No point in rushing to but a card that isn't really what I want. Especially if I want to get a good year or two out of it.

No it will not be..infact it will be the opposite.

I hope to be wrong, but when i'm going to buy a 650E gfx card, i want exceptional performance & image quality, and i think that GDDR3 is holding the true power of these cards. Even the 512bit bus won't be enough to feed this monster properly at high res res with high level of AA/AF.

Isn't that a tad premature ? I mean not one single benchmark (a credible one) is out yet so why make that descicion already ? You'll have plenty of time making a better grounded choice once more imformation is out so whats the rush ?

It beats the GTX in 3DMark. SO? Who cares?
The 4870X2 will be CrossFire dependent. If a game doesn't scale @ CF, this X2 won't scale or outperform a GTX280 at all. And Crossfire sucks. ;)
A single chip like the GTX280 is always better than a Crossfire solution. It alway performs 100%.
The 4870X2 will use more power too, and will be about the same price as the GTX I guess. So who cares about a 4870X2.
GTX280... It will rock! :captnkill:

But you have in your sign: ":D Soon: nVidia GTX 280 SLi :D", so, what happens if a game doesn't scale @ SLI ?
Also, about the price, check this:

The GTX 280 gets listed. First price stands at €575
Exactly: 907$ :thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

Walterman, those are EU prices. Europeans are the ones getting ripped off, not the US. The 9800GX2 retailed at $600 in the US, but at 530e in Europe. Unless you are in Europe, where price gouging is a normal phenomenon, I'm sure you won't have to pay $900 for the card...

The 4870X2 will use more power too
But are you sure on this? From what I have read the the GT200 is power hungry and we know that ATI have always been good with low power use in Idle and they may have sorted out their laod too. But as always we will have to wait for product release.

Again, that's not the US price... That's from the European quote of 575e converted to USD. You brits will pay around 450 quid from certain retailers like oc.uk. We Europeans (ie, France, where I get my stuff from) will pay 550e+...

Yeah, i'm in Europe, and price gouging sucks ! :thumbdwn:
Will you pay 900$ for an high end gfx card in the US ?
It's very hard for us to buy our hardware here. And we do not earn more money than in the US.
I dunno why all the companies abuse from us. The Euro keeps growing & growing, but companies keep doing 1:1 exchange here. I was expecting to see a price drop, cause when i bought my 8800GTX, 1E was 1.4$, and i paid 575E for my card. But now, with 1E = 1.58$ !!!, i still see the same 1:1 conversion. Almost 2y later, the Euro grew a 20%, and we still pay the same. We should be paying 480E max atm. At least ! And not this ripping ! :thumbdwn:
I feel better now after releasing all my rage :)

I agree and its even worse really for us in the UK with or normal 1:1 conversion.
I bet they will be about $500 in the US as I don't see them spening $900
but back on topic sort of the GT200-series going to be a disappointment it will if it costs as much as we think :) :)

Its $649 US, according to reliable sources.
Yea the cost is where i think ATi is counting on...ATi is defiantly going on a low price point...and if the performance is 'enough'...Xfire might be a option...Xfire seems to scale better better than SLI...

Well I agree with the cost and that is why I am thinking of going ATI for my next card.

TDP of 1 4870=157W.
CF= 157Wx2= 314W. So a HD4870X2 is not a energy saver too... ;)
It seems that the GTX280 will only use 25W idle btw. ATi can't beat that. And every computer is idling most of the time.

SLi scales in a lot more games then CF. I ditched the Radeon HD3870X2 very soon because it was sucky comparing it to SLi. CF doesn't scale, and in as much games as SLi. SLi is more mature, and scales in most games. CF is one hell of a pain in the azz. Hotfix here, hotfix there, problems here problems there... Very bad drivers too... And noisy...
And if a game doesn't support SLi, I'll turn it off.
I don't care about the price btw. If the card performs 1,8 as fast as an 88ooUltra, I'm willing to pay for it. :)
And if the Radeon HD4870X2 will be slightly faster in some games as a single GTX280? I dont care. That card will be expensive too I guess.

pretty pathetic IMO, that 2x 4870 is only a bit faster than 1x GTX280. I'm guessing SLI GTX280 will crush 4870GX2 (nana2)
the only real advantage of 4870 is that it will be cheaper. OTOH, if you want to save money just buy a midrange card and turn off the AA.
only 1 more week to go! :captnkill:

I don't think the Euro is growing, rather its the other currencies that are declining. Also EU governments slap so much tax and other tarrifs on foreign products that the "price gouging" may well be just a matter of the added expense of imports. Not only that but it seems that the EU is sueing everyone and their mother these days so maybe its just payback in certain cases. ;)
