it' sound like a washing machine.....From Tom's hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-gtx-280,1953-26.html

Look like I will have to keep my 8800GTX, damn this card has nine lives...

Noisy card I hate.... look like we'll have another fiasco by Nvidia....

During Windows startup, the GT200 fan was quiet (running at 516 rpm, or 30% of its maximum rate). Then, once a game was started, it suddenly turned into a washing machine, reaching a noise level that was frankly unbearable – especially the GTX 280. The GTX 260 did slightly better, but also became noisy at 1250 rpm (the noise of the air flow, not of the fan itself). We should tell you, however, that our at-idle readings are taken after all our benchmarks have been run, after just a few minutes at idle. The problem is that the GTX 280 never really goes back to its minimum level,

Every generation people are like "OMG highest power consumption EVER!!11", it's nothing new and should be expected. There were very similar complaints about the 8800 GTX...

Let us now turn to the final words of this short test. Not like us to the GeForce 280 GTX little. How can we build on the negative side almost the only high electricity consumption under load listen. Here toppt the graphics card itself the Radeon HD 3870 X2 and the GeForce 9800 GX2. Unfortunately, a new negative record: Never before has a single graphics card under load so much consumed. But under IDLE turns the tide for the better: Through various energy-saving features such as 2D mode with clock reduction consumed the new graphics card in idle less than their predecessors. The radiator leaves a usual impression: Under this burden is clearly audible, is idle the noise level pleasantly quiet.

Clearly audible is not the same thing as very noisy, hell the fan on my 8800GTX is clearly audible when its at 100% but i would be a fool to call it very noisy.I had a ATI 850 xt that sounded like a vacuum cleaner at fullt tilt,THAT was very noisy...

In idle its suppose to be good..which is pretty impressive. Not 100% of the time the machine is on its playing games...

The GX2's are very loud in Quad-SLI also. Only with Crysis though, nothing else really stresses them that much.
It will be interesting to compare them.

wow look at the crysis benchmark

1280x1024 DX10 4xAA 16xAF

8800 GTX 26,37 FPS
GTX 280 42,95 FPS

wow thats fantastic.
the FPS are from the crysis benchmark test. i dont know if when playing the game the fps is more higher or lower?

do you think that with 64bit the FPS is better or lower?

This will go well with my noisy Q6600 :bleh:

It's quite likely that Tom's tested cards that had the same problem as many users reported in this forum, ie overheating (thus the extreme fan speed up). They said themselves that the GTX280 overheated in an open environment and had to use extra fans to keep it stable...

Actually, I was always very surprised how quiet the 8800 GTX has been for a high end card. I had used aftermarket coolers for years on every high end card I owned because they were so loud, even at idle. The 8800 GTX was nearly silent at idle and wasn't too bad even when ramped up. Also, it quieted quite quickly after gaming.

Thats not true at all. Even though the 8800 GTX uses a lot of power, the cooling solution is very quiet, even moreso than lesser powered parts before it.

.... The problem is that the GTX 280 never really goes back to its minimum level,

I had that problem too, turned on low level fan control in RivaTuner and it seems to be working, the fan is spinning down in low-intensity 3D and goes down to barely audible in 2D.

i have try but dont work. My gtx 280 fan never goes back to its minimum level (40%) in 2d mode, with 56°C GPU temp. Why??

The GTX280 is so much quieter than the GX2. The difference is amazing.

hi, but your gtx 280 come back to 40% (fan speed) after a game??
