Here's my first swipe @ Vantage with a single GTX 280. It was @ 665|2300. Driver 177.35.

I'll have gaming results and other benches later.

Ok, not so happy right now. Tried GTX 280 with Crysis and the noise from the fan/card is ridiculous, fan continually spins up and down which makes it even more irritating, plus there’s a weird stutter to the game, oh and to top it off it reached 105C :headexplode:

I might return it, this just isn’t acceptable, much worse than even the fan on my old X1900XTX and hotter.

I was just trying Jericho with AA enabled. Heavy smoke plus AA would drop my old 8800GTX to 32FPS at times. Lowest I've seen so far with this card is 54FPS @ 1680x with AA and all high. Most often I am between 65-91FPS.

AoC with bloom enabled all high @ 1680x 8xAA|16xAF has been 42-120FPS. That's in Khemi and Khopshef. FPS near water is way better with this card. Game's been running smooth.

I also tried the pool room in TRL with next gen and AA enabled @ 1680x. I shoot from one end to the other to catch all the HDR. My 8800GTX did 46FPS there, this card does 90.

Something must be wrong with those numbers... 260 GTX is faster than 9800GTX...

In one bench according to AT.

FS has a preview up of the HD 4850 too and they have it losing in Bioshock to the 9800GTX at every resolution-

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_radeon_hd_4850_geforce_9800_gtx+/page7.asp

According to Anandtech it "outscores" the GTX 260 in Bioshock. It does not in; Crysis, CoD4, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Assassin's Creed, Oblivion, and TheWitcher.

Like always sometimes Crossfire looks great and when AFR fails, it fails badly.

Little scaling-
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7513/17098da6.png (http://imageshack.us)

Bad to no scaling-
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/4517/17101dl0.png (http://imageshack.us)

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9065/17102vu1.png (http://imageshack.us)

If I had my heart set on Multi-GPU it would be two 8800GTS 512Mb cards. They are over at newegg for 160usd with rebate each. nVidia uses more than one form of AFR and consequentially SLi will likely work more often in titles than Crossfire.

I've used Multi-GPU, SLi and Crossfire. I vastly prefer a single strong GPU and to each their own on that matter.

For a card to be "faster" in my book it needs to win more than it loses. For it to be a winner on another level, it also needs to offer up consistent performance.

I do think the HD 4850 looks like a darn good card considering the price, and I wouldn't bother with Crossfire personally. I've already outlined a few reasons why not and may add; micro stutter, poor min FPS and wild FPS fluctuations.

Here's a couple of quick grabs from the Crysis demo in foliage.

All high DX9 @ 1680x 8xAF 52FPS

All high DX9 @ 1680x 4xAA|8xAF 34FPS
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/513/crysis4aahighwf2.jpg

TRL Croft Manor pool room with next gen+AA 90FPS. I got 46 there with my old 8800GTX-
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/3843/trl2008nextgenaaov7.jpg

Crysis all very high with 8xAF was mid 20s. So not very hot. 26FPS was typical with dips to 23. There wasn't a lot of variation at all.

DiRT caps in a bit. Every game I've tried so far has been smooth. No hitching or hard FPS crashes/drops.

Here's DiRT, 1680x 4xAA|8xAF. I did all Ultra and then all High. Besides FPS differences I could really tell in game.

Ultra- shows 41-57 on tracks 1 and 3.

All Ultra use to murder my 8800GTX @ 1680x with 4xAA.

EDIT:

The WiC bench 1680x-

Very high
min 26 avg 47 max 94

High
min 29 avg 61 max 137

Medium
min 52 avg 95 max 220
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3497/wicmyq0.jpg

I tried the Crysis bench will all very high at 1680x and the last loop reported avg 27FPS. The first loop was avg 22FPS.

No chop and no stutter with the GTX 280 on any tests.

Maybe because the card is getting hotter? People have reported 100+ temps.

OK

I just received my EVGA GTX280 SC. This is how the swap went.

1. Uninstalled Drivers
2. Uninstalled AGEIA PHxyX Driver
3. Shutdown
4. Took out my EVGA 9800 GX2 SSC (only had it a week and its going back for the 280 i just got)
5. Installed my new EVGA GTX280 SC
6. Booted up windows, Installed new 177.35 Vista 64 & installed new Nvidia PhysX driver

All i can say is OMFG what a difference this card has made in Crysis (Only tryed this so far)

When i had the 9800 GX2 installed, Crysis would stutter and freeze badly, game was unplayable (in high settings at 1920x1200 no AA)

Now i can play exact same settings as smooth as silk.

Also the heat output from the 280 is no where near as bad as the GX2 was. The GX2 would heatup the sides of my case (Lian-Li V2000) badly, the 280 is alot cooler.

I would definatly recommend this product to all.

This is a 100% Kickass product (nana2)(nana2)(nana2)

I was monitoring mine and it never got hotter than 84°C. I'm not sure why the 3DMark scores went down :( Strange.

guess that cooling isnt properly seated on gpu, thats why so big temps.

84°C isn't bad for being under full load. That shouldn't be hot enough for the card to throttle back. I think that threshold is over 100°C range somewhere. I'll try the benchmark again with the fan at 100% just to make sure it's not the temps that are causing the lower scores.

Temp was 64°C max with fan at 100%. The score was just a couple hundred points lower still. I bumped the FTW clocks up to 702/1500/1300. *Shrug* I guess I'll just leave it running at stock speeds than :)

Recieved My EVGA GTX280 SSC Edition today and wow ,I have to say, I am very impressed.Futuremark Vantage scores have shot up by alot..

8800Ultra(175.16) - P6607
GTX280(177.39 w/no PhysX driver) - P11124
GTX280(177.39 w/NV PhysX driver) - P13123

I had actually been waiting to play the new Vulcano level for Crysis till the new card came so the time had come to really test the card out.I installed the mod without installing the ultra high quality config they suggest to use with it and just decided to turn all graphics settings to very high ,1680X1050,no AA and no Vsync.I played for about 20-25 minutes an noticed no "show-stopper" slowdowns there was a little bit of chugging near the beginning (on the beach) and the frames via Fraps dipped down to about 24 FPS at a few times.I did notice the fan of the GTX280 after playing for the 20 or so minutes but not to the point where it was destracting or in any way loud imo.In checking the EVGA precision tool after exiting the game I noticed that my GPU temperature had maxed out at around 86C.

So far I am very happy with My purchase and Nvidia adding PhysX support recently only sweetens the deal though only slightly because it only works with a benchmark and a game I am not interested in owning.

Is there a trick to getting the 177.39 driver to work correctly? My GPU score is up to 11.3k now in Vantage and my CPU score didn't budge from 177.35. I installed the separate nVidia physics driver too.

Did you install the PhysX driver after the Dispaly Driver

NM, I found it, it's not the one available on nVidia's site.

Ouch. I was wondering that as my GTX is running 648/1026/1620 shader. I get almost 16,000 in 3dmark 06 currently and about 6900 in Vantage performance. My 22" LCD max res is 1680x1050 so for me there is no sense.

The HD4850 CF is looking attractive though.
