The new nvidia's are out. So what are you going to do about it?

The GTX 280 is too steep for me... but I'm looking closely at the 9800GX2 for high performance at a more reasonable price.

What are you going to do?

06-16-08, 05:44 PM
Doing nothing atm. My GTX does fine for me at my native res. Besides - those prices just piss me the heck off. I'm hoping ATI's newest will give enough performance at a DECENT price to justify grabbing one.

If not - meh. I'm done with this upgrade bs.

As said before I got a GTX280 to get me by untell teh 4870x2s come out, so I can get two for my x38 board.

Nothing. This 8800gt runs what I play at 2304x1440 just great, usually with AA. Don't care much about Crysis as I don't like the mp side of the game...

Still want to see what the 4870 and x2 can do though :captnkill:

cant afford it here in the UK, $600 is about 600 which in reality would be $1100..thats how it works here in UK we get so ripped off!, so im stuck with my GTX for now

I'm waiting to see some concrete numbers on the ATI product. $650 is too much for me to spend just to find out a cheaper and better product followed shortly after. If no ATI product by my birthday next month, I'll splurge and get 2.

My current setup is plenty fast enough for now. When more games come out that raise the bar then I'll consider upgrading my video card. If I upgraded right now it'd only be for Crysis and maybe a few areas in Mass Effect and The Witcher. Not really worth $650.

06-16-08, 08:25 PM
I'm not buying. What do I really get for my $600? Better frame rates in Crysis?...Yawn.

i'm waiting for the 300 series

GTX 380!!!

I'm waiting to see that those monster 800SP units from good ole ATI are gonna do for half the price.....then I'll ebay the 8800GTX and buy whatever gives the best bang for the buck.

Nothing, my 9600GT is more then enough for the games I play or plan to play over the next year. At that point, I'll re-evaluate.

Just don't get your hopes up based on the number of stream processors, as ATI's seem to be slower than NVs. First off, 320 are reserved for physics, so the 4870 has 420 SPs available. Secondly, the HD3870 had 320 SPs, and it was about as fast as the 9600GT, which as 64 SPs.

My 8800 GTX does wonders @ 1920x1200 currently, so until I hit some sort of extreme limit (or get a job :p ), I'll be sticking with it. Hopefully, it won't burn out anytime soon.... cause I has no monies. :(

06-16-08, 09:09 PM
My 8800GTX kills in all my games right now at 1920x1200 even with AA on in most games. Also, looking at Crysis benchmarks it really does not seem like such a big step (as the 8800 was from the 7's or 6's). If it drops close to $500 I might think about it... or if some game comes out that my 8800GTX can't handle anymore :)

06-16-08, 09:34 PM
It looks tempting but my 8800GTX SLI is very comparible (if not faster) than one of these so I think I'm going to hold off for right now. Hopefully the prices will settle a little and then I might think about a pair of them.

06-16-08, 09:53 PM

makes me so happy to hear all these people aren't going to give
NVIDIA this ridiculous amount of money.

i mean seriously look how cheap the 8800 gt's are now.. they can be had
for a little over 100.

don't buy into the hype people !!!(nana2)

Stepping up my two EVGA 9800GX2's to EVGA GTX280 FTW's

Purchased 1 other GTX280, 2x Tek4 Slim LN2 Pots, and spare Foxconn BlackOps, QX9650, and OCZ Flex 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR3 1600, 32GB MTRON PRO SSD being sent to the person I sponsor.

06-16-08, 10:03 PM
I'd like to get a gtx280 ,but I also want a 24 inch monitor. So I think I will get the monitor and wait for the prices to come down in 6 months or just wait for a refresh.

@meth I don't think you should get a gx2, get a 260 or wait it out.

06-16-08, 10:36 PM
pc gaming is pretty much dead for me...so I am glad with my 8800 GTX!!!!

What are the odds a HD 4870 will be able to beat the GTX 280? I want the fastest single GPU. Price doesn't really matter.
