GTX 280 vs. 8800GTS G92 SLI

Anyone seen any benches of GTX 280 vs. 8800GTS G92 SLI, mostly interested in Crysis and Oblivion...

I'm thinking the performace is similar yet the cost is near half, yes/no?

If a 2560x LCD is in your near future I'd look @ GTX 260 SLi or GTX 280 SLi. There are even a few games that would benefit from Tri-SLi @ that res.

If you game 1920x and lower with medium AA, 8800GTS SLi would be a great buy. In some cases they would be fine @ 2560x and in some titles with AA, like WiC and LP, they would not.

Crysis runs MUCH BETTER on my GTX 280 vs. the 9800 GX2. I used to get all kinds of stuttering with the 9800 GX2. Now I hardly get any with the GTX 280. That 1GB of onboard memory and 512-bit memory bus sure come in handy!!!

Yeah I guess that's one thing that's never really comes out in the benchmarks is the stuttering... I'll think I'll create a poll for that... if I get 40fps but is stutters like crap, what's the point...

I am running dual nVidia 8800 gts on a Crosshair M2 board.

I want to upgrade to dual gtx 280s.


My question is: does anyone know if these cards will fit in the same space? How about heat... My case is the CoolerMaster with both front and rear fans, both side covers and top and bottoms are well vented...

Pretty sure my Power supply will be sufficent: 850W Thermaltake(quad sli/8800gtx sli compatible).

The cards are 11" instead of 8.5" They generate more heat too, but I don't think it will be too much of an issue. If you are talking about the Stacker 830 case then my only concern is cable length. You'll need to be able to run one of the 8 pin connectors and one of the 6 pin connectors to the bottom GPU. It's going to be a pretty good stretch but I think you can manage it. The PSU should handle them just fine. :)

@OP: I would take 1 GTX 280 over 2 G92s anyday because of the vram. It will make a difference at 1920 x 1200 in both of those games. I can almost run out of vram on my 8800GTX SLI.

My next concern is with the length. the top card would fit np, but the bottom one would be obstructed by my cooler pump for my cpu... I really don't want to have to drain cooler and make new tubes...

From everything i've seen so far though, running one BFG GTX 280 would out perform my dual 8800 GTS's...

So I could just do the one until I figure out what to do about my cooling system. And possible save few buck by waiting to buy 2nd card...

That definitely looks like the stacker. It looks like you have plenty of room from what I can make out. If you have a tape measure just hold it behind your current card and measure another 1.5" or about 40mm. The power cables on the GTX 280 come out of the top of the card so you won't have an issue there. Where you have your 6 pin for the bottom card ran you wouldn't have any issues running the 8 pin down that same path and have enough length. Mine are tucked into the channels next to the drive bay, so I needed to use the adapters to get to my bottom card.

Here is a pic of my setup with a pair of 8800GTX cards in it. They are the same length as the GTX 280s. You can see they hang off the back of the board a little bit, but they still aren't that close to the drive bay. I think that's where your pump is but it's hard to tell from the pic. EDIT: I see the pump down there now. If you look closely in my pic you can see the screw hole behind the card. There is plenty of clearance there.

Another measurement is from the back of the motherboard. I'm showing 7/8" overhang from the card. If you have 1" between the motherboard and the pump, I'd say your okay.

If by "Crosshair M2", you are referring to an ASUS Crosshair II Formula Socket AM2+ motherboard, I can confirm that two GTX280's fit OK on the board and perform very well when paired with a Phenom II CPU. Not sure which CoolerMaster case you are referring to, but I've experienced no problems fitting everything into a CoolerMaster stacker 830.

You're welcome. :) Also, re-read what I wrote cause I edited it about 5 times, just in case you didn't see the 2nd measurement. That way you have 2 ways to know 100% if it's going to fit or not.

GTX 280 is a better investment. They'll both give similar performance. Under that condition you'll want the larger framebuffer afforded by the 280. Having at least 786 megs of memory on your GPU ram will really benefit some games like Far Cry 2 and heavy anti aliasing settings.

I have had both and I thought the two 8800GTS was just as fast untill I put in my GTX 280 and it really was no compareing them.FSAA and aniso runs so much smoother with a GTX 280.That extra 512MB of ram really comes in handy.The GTX 280 will run the newer games so much better .To me ther is just no comparsion.The GTX280 is over twice as fast as a pair of 8800GTS in sli in some games.You want regret buying a GTX 280 or a GTX 285 or even a pair of GTX 260-212 and run it in SLI.
