Crossfire scales very, very well. And the AA performance takes a very little hit. Looking very good.

Also dont forget the AMP version of the GTX280 is the highly overclocked version.

Yup looks like the 4870x2 is going to beat the gtx280 by a good margin. Too bad it's still some weeks away.. :thumbdwn:

Drivers ForceWare 177.34 , Catalyst 6.5 and Catalyst 6.6 Beta

Hmm, typo anyone? :D

Some amazing scaling there, where it falls short in crysis at higher res the 4870 1GB should pick up the pieces. It's seeming like a 4850x2 with 1GB shared memory could be on par with the GTX 280... it should only cost around $400 too. No idea if it will be in great supply as it's up to partners whether they want to make it, same deal with the 1GB 4870. As for the 4870x2, it could just hold both the performance crown and the price/performance crown.

No way GTX280 is going to sell after more reviews come out of the 4xxx series..they really will have to drop the price alot more...

gj amd/ati. I think i might just go ati this time

What's great about the HD 4850 isn't just the fact that it offers excellent value for money in Crossfire, but also that the performance you get is the difference between playing games at 1920 x 1200 and not. While the HD 4850 on its lonesome is probably best for gaming at up to about 1680 x 1050, if you really want to up the ante and get some 1920 x 1200 or 2560 x 1600 gaming in, going Crossfire is definitely the right thing to do.

What AMD has on its side is the fact that Intel boards are Crossfire compatible, and what enthusiast doesn’t have an Intel CPU with a supporting Intel chipset? - While the 700i series of chipsets from NVIDIA are popular, they have nowhere near the market share of Intel. Thanks to the price and the ease of setup, anyone can really get on the Crossfire wagon. And if you find yourself with a system as powerful as the one we’ve got here today from IBuyPower Australia, that’s when the cards will really begin to shine.

It looks like NVIDIA really has some competition this time around, and as long as enthusiasts around the world get excited about the new HD 4k series, AMD could really begin to pick up some market share.

Spot on...i cant wait to see some 4870 results...

I think Nvidia need to come up with some price drops and a die-shrinked GTX 280 X2, otherwise AMD could be the winner of this round.

Ok....then :p Send me PM if you are really interested in selling :)
Now after giving it some thought, I don't want to con you out of your money by selling you a microstutter. The 4870x2 is probably going to be a much better choice. Or wait for my GTX280...:p

Radeon HD 4870 scores P7534 in Vantage

Radeon 4870 memory works at 2 x 1800MHz

Quad Data Rate

Despite the non impressive 900MHz basic frequency, GDDR5 based Radeon HD 4870 will have an impressive bandwidth and speed of 3600MHz effectively.

The 512Mb GDDR5 chips that ATI uses on its cards with 900MHz frequency have 3.6GB/s throughput or double what would GDDR 3 or 4 have at the same 900MHz speed. You can blame Quad data rate for such a throughput. Depending how you want to write it its either 900MHz times 4 or 1800MHz which is the GDDR5 dual data rate times two cycles. The important thing is that both would sum up to impressive 3600 number.

ATI’s Radeon HD 4870 512MB card has eight 512Mbit chips on the card while 1GB cards will get the whole sixteen chips, but this will probably happen at some later date due to high cost of GDDR5 memory.

You can see that Radeon HD 4870 will end up with almost twice as much bandwidth than Radeon HD 4850 and we are talking about number close to 115GB/s at least if our math worked well this time.

The card is out tomorrow.
