First preview with benchmarks I've found:

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/724-1/preview-ati-radeon-hd-4850.html

For a 200$ mid-range single chip card it's a strong contender, beating the 8800 Ultra in a number of benchmarks and even the GTX260 in a couple.

Feel free to post more as they come in.

Very nice! Beating the 260 at some games. Can't wait to see what the 4870 is capable of.

I'd like to know if that image is authentic. If it is then AMD's got something special on their hands since the 4870 is suppose to be in the $300s and a crossfire or X2 4870 setup would cost just about as much as a single 280 and, if these numbers are to be trusted, completely destroy the 280.

Yeah what the hell! :wtf: 44fps@VH 1600x1200! too good to be true honestly.

I don't think I'm ready to believe those numbers but it sure would be nice and, I would definitely be making my 1st and 2nd ATI purchase ever.

If this is true, I'll ditch my GTX280's for a s4870x2, and add a second one for CF later when move to Nehalem and a X58 based mobo. I aslo heard rumors about the 4870x2 eliminating microstuttering by utilizing memory sharing.

Oh dear god. That picture has been posted several times over that last few months. It's confirmed to be fake. Twice...

It's fake,4870 will be faster than 4850 but there's no way in hell that it will be that much faster than the gx2.

That picture is a fake. But the benchmarks in the link from the OP are not fake. Ignore that stupid picture.

Very decent performance with AA enabled.

The drop in performance from non AA to AA is quite attractive.

I will buy the GTX 2800 off you :p

Not bad for a €159 board, the 4870 and 4870x2 numbers will be very interesting

Can't believe how small the performance hit is when enabling AA when comparing to the 9800GTX, both being 512MB. The 4850's performance hit is more comparable (usually better!) to the 8800U, a 768MB card. Look at Crysis, the 4850 is ~1FPS behind without AA, but 5FPS faster than the 9800GTX with 4xAA and slightly faster than the 8800U, outstanding.

Pretty damn good results. Not to mention the massive performance improvement over the 3xxx series in GRID. I'm starting to think I'll definitely get a 1GB 4870 - it should my budget perfectly and seems to deliver everything I need.

wow

the 4850 is up to par with the 8800ultra and 9800gtx, beating out the gtx260 at times. with AA it has little performance drop. 4850 here i come :D. theres quite a few 4850s already on sale in my local stores for between 1500-1600HKD (190-200USD). any idea on when the gddr5 versions of the 4850 are coming out?

The 4850 looks like the perfect upgrade for me, but I may hold off for a while since my HD3850 is still serving me fine. If games dip below acceptable performance levels in the next few months I may consider picking one of these up.

When is the 4xxx series set to release anyways?

I think if you want the DDR5, you'll have to get the 4870.

Pretty good results! Really hoping to see an improvement with the next set of drivers in crysis. 4850x2 would sure be a great upgrade! :)

ATi's price/performance is defiantly going to be a strong thing to look at...nvidia might have to lower there prices really low if they want to compete.

And many people are on x38/48 boards as well

Still a bit behind the gtx 280, but with 4xaa and 16xAF they're pretty much on par. With newer drivers and better crossfire implementation in games, this setup is going to fly(at a 100€ lower price than that of the Gtx 280)! :)
