I followed some instructions I found on the Fasterfox 2.0 page to make it work with Firefox 3 and although one part of the instructions weren't very clear, I managed to get it to work.

http://rapidshare.com/files/123667747/fasterfox-2.0.0-fx.zip.html

1. Download from RapidShare (sorry, only way I knew to host a file)
2. Unzip file
3. Open your Add-Ons window in Firefox 3 and drag the fasterfox-2.0.0-fx.xpi file into the Extensions window and install. Very simple.

FasterFox is bad. It overloads servers and ruins everything for everyone else. Will also get you banned from some places.

Stop costing MikeC more money SLippe and be a man and wait a few seconds.

Fasterfox

This Web accelerator has a "pre-fetching" mechanism that makes you a very bad Web citizen. Here's how it works: You land on a page and start reading it. While your system is idle, Fasterfox silently starts following links and downloading the destination pages. The idea is that if you then decide to click on one of these links, the page is already cached on your local machine and will pop up very quickly.

This is nice for you, but it can be an incredible waste of bandwidth -- just think about how many links are on a typical page. Even if you don't care about bandwidth, there are reports that some systems administrators are now detecting the extension (and others like it) and blocking clients that are using it. While it is possible to use Fasterfox responsibly, it is best avoided unless you know what you are doing.

Over the last few months the amount of visitors using Mozilla Firefox has grown to about 25%. The amount of bandwidth being used has also increased a large amount. Part of the reason behind this is that many Firefox users use an extension called “Fasterfox”. This extension “pre-fetches” links on a page so that if the user were to click on a link it would load much faster because its already been downloaded. This may be more convenient for viewer, but is a major problem for many webmasters who are low on bandwidth. Since Fasterfox constantly requests new files, it can cause many servers to overload much faster than if a person viewing the same content without Fasterfox were to view it.

Fasterfox is in fact one of the most popular extensions for Firefox. It is currently ranked as the 3rd most downloaded extension for Firefox on Mozilla Update page. (aka. Firefox Add-ons) The latest version of Fasterfox, v1.0.3, checks the for the robots.txt file on the site the viewer is visiting to check whether it should pre-fetch or not. This new feature allows webmasters to add the following text (in bold) to their robots.txt file to prevent Fasterfox from pre-fetching links. Text To Add To “robots.txt”:

I'm using it regardless. I've never had a problem with it.

*sigh* That's the whole point. You don't, but others do...

It's like smoking in the non smoking area.

That's only if you have the Pre-Fetch option enabled. That I don't use.

However, I do have my half-open connections in WinXP set to Unlimited. ;)

It's also a security risk, but that only affects you. So be wary using it at online stores and banking.

Who in their right mind would use FasterFox with the current FF3.0?? Doesn't make sense seeing how fast FF has become in this version.

I never used it even in FF2.5 as the extension is nothing more than a few changes in about:config which have been proven to be unreliable, causing some pages to not display correctly while providing a questionable "speed boost".

Now that I've learned about the pre-caching stuff I despise the extension even more.

I use it on my really old linux machine. Install bind dns along with it and it is noticeably faster.

FF3 is really fast on my windows machines as it is now.
