Seen running Crysis

We had a chance to see the R700 card and we can tell you that this black PCB card is up and running. As we said before, ATI is ready with the hardware but not with the drivers, and the launch is directly dictated by the software development.

A dual chip driver always has its own complexity dimension, but we remember that ATI did quite a good job with Radeon 3870 X2, so we believe that this tradition might continue with the R700 dual driver.

We deliberately didn't want to jump to any conclusions and call R700 - Radeon HD 4870 X2, as ATI still hasn’t fixed the name. Give it a few more days or weeks.

The card looks very much like Radeon 3870 X2 and the cooler looks the same; just this time the PCB is black. The card should be ready by the end of August, but there is still not any fixed date.

Black PCB is sexy

I hope that they feature shared memory between the GPUs, and AF quality like in the G80.

Quite possibly my next card.

Wife's gonna kill me. :o

Gotta love the guys at fudzilla. You could just make up stuff that sounds plausible and enthusiasts will link it. Brilliant really. :)

I do know one thing, I will not spend over 6 bills on a single GPU now, or five years from now. So it may be my next card as well.

Well put it this way. 2 4850s with ddr3 in crossfire is faster then a GTX280. You would think 2 4870s with DDR5 will be at least 10-15% faster then the 4850s. that would leave one to believe the R700 with its 1-2GB shared memory pool and new link chip would be just a little faster then that. Who knows.

I also want to see benchmarks with the new hotfix drives that supposably increased the all around performance of the 48xx series even more then the benchmarks we already have.

Just what are the rumored (and most realistic...) specs for the R700, anyway? This may be my next card as well, although I'm weary of AMD's drivers (granted, Nvidia's driver support wasn't too hot during the months following Vista's launch).

not sure what benchmarks you're basing that on, but in Crysis 2x 4870 is just barely faster than 1x GTX 280

How about:

But hey, Crysis isn't the best example and hopefully scaling will improve with a future driver release with it. Here's some better examples:

This isn't even taking into account the inter-core communication benefits 4870x2 is rumored to have.

Yeah, I'm expecting the R700 to thrash the GTX280. And if it doesn't suffer from normal crossfire problems it will be an even more attractive product...

Sampsa Muropaketti (famous finnish overclocker) has already recieved one (blog post titled "GTX 280 Killer is here"). Expect records to tumble.

I thought that it was going to be launched in late August

It's a shame in those benchmarks they only compare a sing 260 and 280 up against 4850 and 4870 CF for the top scores. I'd really be interested to compare SLI vrs Crossfire in games other than Crysis.

Microstuddering fixed on R700:

Pretty much seals the deal for me, thats the only thing that would hold me back from getting one.

Will I need a PCI-E 2.0 slot to get the best from this card ?
I think my P35 mobo only has PCI-E 1.x slots :(

Here's Crossfire vs SLI performance on those same titles:

Very possibe IMO, this card will use more bandwidth then anything before it. I wouldn't go upgrading just yet though, If your set on getting the card, just see how it works out in your P35 then make a decision on the board.

I don't think so. No card needs PCI-E 2.0's bandwidth yet, and the cards TDP is below needing the power from the slot. For heavy overclocking though, PCI-E 2.0 might help.
