I was by my local Bestbuy to buy some blank media for office and I saw they had the visiontek 4850s on sale for 149. I picked one to replace my 8800GTX. Should I pick one more and go for a crossfire solution?

do it. you would have better performance then a GTX280 for 300 thats a damn good deal. Hell pick up a 3rd for Trifire if you have 3 slots.

single 4850 will not replace 8800GTX, but two will almost replace GTX 280.

then , a GTX280 isn't 60% faster than 8800GTX ? :headexplode:

I wouldn't switch a 8800GTX with a single 4850, it's not a big change. If you add a second 4850 it would be perfect

Huh? Get the facts right. A single 4850 is beating the 8800GTX in every benchmark and for $149! That's awesome!

Granted it's not a very big step up from a 8800GTX, but two of them would be...

ATI has produced an amazing card for the price! Glad to see nVidia is feeling some pressure. Maybe they'll actually drop the price on the GTX 280 quickly...

And as the $150 sinks into my brain even more, you could buy 5 of them for the same price as ONE GTX 280! That is insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bash:

i'm coming from a 8800GTS G92. and what i see actually is ... a decent texture memory management... no more freeze due to 100% ram filled, no more untextured objet etc...
I agree having a new vid card is something cool. but i'm pretty sure the ram management is a problem for G92 .:p. wich isn't for glorious ATI

I just picked 2 of these up from BestBuy for a $150 ea. I have a crossfire Mobo see sig, and my game play is smoother than a babies bottom.

But seriously I didnt have to change my PS or Mobo, and that made a big decision on getting a pair of these.

The only game I played so far is ETQW.

I play at 1680X1200 with my 8800GTX, and with the following setting aa set at 4X and as set to 16 with in game settings all on high, and no soft particles.
I average 60 fps plus.

With 2 4850 in crossfire same setting as above I get an average of 90 fps.

the only drawback is the thing gets hot idles at 80c. and the single slot cooler blows the hot air back in the case I have a Cosmos so Ill have to get an after market cooler.

But again for 300.00 bucks lots of bang for your buck.

Removed the heatsinks pretty easy, and added some as5 to the GPU'S dropped my temps around 10c during full load its hard to tell while idle because the fan doesnt go on full in fact during idle fan speed is slow.

have not found a utlity that supports fan speed on these.

alright next time Ill use smother than butter...... where are your guys minds at Jeezzzz.

If you want a semi-permanent solution to make the fan spin at 100% all the time, VR-zone are on it:

For overclockers on a budget who do not mind noise, and want that extra bit in cooling performance, a little elbow grease is all it takes to force the fan to spin at full speed. Remove the fan connector and locate the blue wire. This is the PWM control wire. Using a pair of tweezers, lift the plastic lip holding the contact, and pull out the wire. Once electrically disconnected, the fan will spin at maximal speed.

It's apparently not an overly loud fan, but still, this isn't a good solution for the average user.

It is well worth $150 ,look like nvidia might have to drop some prices if you can get the 4850 for that cheap.
