Nvidia's 55nm refresh of its GT200 core, 400mm^2 on a TSMC 55nm process.
Nvidia has placed orders for 65nm and 55nm versions of the GT200 chip and there is a big reason why. Nvidia is simply playing it safe and it doesn’t want any delays.
Nvidia traditionally migrates from bigger transistors to smaller in the entry-level, less complicated chips and then tries this in the higher end. Usually this works well, and you can remember that Nvidia G80 went from 90nm to 80nm and the G92 65nm to 55nm in this order.
As it’s pressured by time it will try to make even its biggest chip in 55nm. If it fails, it will have a 65 nm version of the chip ready to take its place. 55nm means that the chips will run a bit cooler and that you can crack the clocks a bit higher and we will probably learn if the fastest version of GT200 will end up at 55nm.

Hey wait a min, here is a 80nm G80? Mine are 90nm.

I'm sure he meant G84/G86.

What does that have to do with the thread?
That Zotac model is gonna be deep frying thx to the stock heat sink...no way in hell its gonna last long on Crysis with those clocks...These things reach 90+ or 105+ on stock speeds...

I read on Rage3D that 4850 has heat issue as it fried at 95c on Crysis because of single slot cooler.
The single slot cooler is a big downside for the 4850 for me, but for some, it's a good bonus. Single slot coolers may be on their way out for mid-high end cards.
Still, the GTX280 running that hot with a 2 slot cooler is much worse than 4850 doing so with a single slot.

None of those numbers are remotely possible, sorry.
Every review I've read of the 4850 says it runs very hot. Most reviews do not say this about the 280. It's amazing every time ATI releases something lately what a load of rubbish their fanboys shovel. Are these guys on the payroll or what?

Hmm... lets see, both are released, the GTX 280 is the only I'm hearing hundereds of cases of overheating from. kthx.

LOL, Fanboys are not on the payroll. They pay these companies millions in cash. The fanboys pay the companies to work for them; much like sports fanatics.

The 4850 does run hot which is normal for a single slot cooler. It gets to over 80C by running Mass Effect. The GTX280 overheating issue is not normal, probably due to some kinda defects or poor assembly.

Look who's talking.
The only times you ever seem to show up is during releases to slam ATI and rah-rah Nvidia.
Nvidia's products the last couple of years have been great for me. I can't stand ATI's pr making claims which turn out to be false. I have also had many problems with ATI's drivers. This is a pro Nvidia site. Nvidia's revenue was almost 400% more than ATI last year so obviously the consumer prefers Nvidia at the moment. That's the only bottom line that matters in business. When some other company starts making the BEST products, Ati, Intel or whoever, I'll buy them.

Nope, the HD 4850 are selling like crazy, so ATi is the consumer's nr. 1 choice right now. The 4870 is going to sell like hot cakes as well, so nvidia is going to loose some market share this time around.

mtl is a focus group member without a doubt.
Keep shoveling the rubbish!! As to the" selling like hotcakes ", a rather ancient expression, ATI division barely made a nickel since the takeover, according to the most recent financials. I hope AMD gets it together as that is obviously good for the buyer.

Do you have any sources? The 4850 was just released and if you check top sellers on newegg 9 of the top 10 are 8/9 series cards. The 4850 and 4870 may sell in high quantities but the 6/7/8 series have been very popular. Enthusiasts know that the hd4000 series are good price/performance cards but it usually takes a while for this to really catch on in the general market. This is also not a high volume time seasonally I do believe. Nvidia may even have gt200b(which is the subject of this thread) out by christmas in time to catch higher sales then whats being seen now and that may have been the idea. I think the hd4000 series will put a little pressure on nvidia and make them realize they can't be complacent. Though, if you already own a 8/9 or hd3000 series cards and are not an enthusiast there really isn't a huge deal of tangible difference. I mean only 1 fps is enough for some people but I/many others don't upgrade every generation. I applaud ATI for this launch and may buy one of these cards for the hell of it even though I bought a 9 series not too long ago. However, they can't be market leader with the kind of record they have had the past few years. I know its not indicative of the entire market but there are a couple of GTX280's on that top sellers list also. With this post I'm saying we don't know how well these cards will sell.

Looking forward to the 290GTX or whatever it'll be called. Any guess at a time frame?
