If I were running things, and I am not :p, I would reduce the price of the GTX 260 while bumping it's clock up to 620-640. I'd raise the GTX 280 to 670-690 and slightly reduce it's price.

[H]ard was only able to raise the core clock on the HD 4870 30MHz which leads me to believe they are flirting with max more than nVidia at this time. There are some factory overclocked GTX 280 cards that are 68-98MHz over default clock right now. I am currently testing 700MHz on mine.

It will be interesting to see how nVidia responds to the HD 4870.

I hope they respond soon. I was pretty close to picking up a 280 but I'm gunna wait it out for a die shrink and price reduction.

I just thought I'd post this because Brady posted :).

Wow... 4870 is a nice work for the price. Glad ATI will be helping NV keep high end graphics card prices in check and give them a reason to compete. This should kick the GTX280 prices below $600 in a few months.

Personally hoping I can push through an EVGA StepUp from my 2.5 month old 8800 GTS to a GTX260 for $150. Then OC it.

There's a huge number of current cards on retail shelves that are obsolete with the 4800's coming out. Might be able to start picking up older cards a lot cheaper if you have an SLI or XFire singleton awaiting a friend.

It's really not a given, the 4870X2 is thought to actually be using two 4850 cores, only they have GDDR5. 4870X2 is only a working title that the industry has sprung upon, for all we know, it could very well be a 4850X2 or 4950X2 etc. Its possible the results could be the same, but I doubt we'll be seeing scores higher then 4870 Crossfire regardless of how the cores communicate. The RV770 core is efficient, but that doesn't mean ATI can simply paste two of them together and expect it to be acceptable with heat and power consumption, they already have heat problems as it is. They will need to cut corners somewhere, maybe even lowering the memory clock.

Keep in mind that the clock gating feature within the RV770 core, wich lowers power consumption in idle mode,is currently not supported with the driver they tested,so that partly explains the high power use in idle mode.

As for the temperatures, that's just a simple bios fix, since the review samples had bios's that limited the fan speeds to 20%,even under load,in an attempt to keep them as quiet as possible,so an increase to 30~40% should get the temps back in line and not increase noise too much either.

Anyways, the HD4870X2's are due in august since ATI stated 8 weeks after the release of the single GPU versions,so we don't have long to wait...:D

well, the card turns up the heat on the gtx 260, not the gtx 280

HD4870 just sucks in DX10 games. Look at Lost Planet for example...heck even 8800GTS is hell of fast for half life 2 engine.

I will say it again.

Lost planet is a game optimized 100% for nVidia with the help of nVidia.

And this is PER nVidia press conferences.

Do I need to dig up links again?

Why are you in denial. The 4000 series are fantastic and no ammount of lies or misinformation can change that. Best in their price points for now. Undoubtably nVidia will counter in some way. They always do. And the beat plays on.

No one said ATI made a card faster than GTX280. Just relaxe. Hahahaha.

Actually games other than Lost Planet show exactly the opposite. HD38xx series perform great in DX10 games (as much as we can say "great" for framerates below 30fps).

Sh*t not sure if me ordering the GT260 was such a good idea now :(. The 4870 look so good. I hope the specs of all the 260's change at the last minute!!

And LP is not the only game, nV has much better relationships with developers through their TWIMTBP program.

lol the 4870 costs ALOT less than GTX 260 here and it totally owns the card.
Cheapest GTX260 about $470 and cheapest 4870 is about $350

NVIDIA FAIL!

I think ATI is back in the game now because nvidia failed so ****ing miserably.

actually it does as 2x4870 are cheaper and much much MUCH better than the gtx280
At thats AMDs plan on getting to the high end segment 2 cheap gpus = powerfull performance

My view on the GTX 260 vs the HD 4870.

The GTX 260s may be sweetened by their OCs. If they can get to 700 like many GTX 280s seem to be doing. We don't know what the max OC for the 4870 will be and it may have a smaller range. Both [H]ard and Legitreviews only got +30MHz on the core with their HD 3870s. By contrast [H]ard got a +94MHz core bump on the 260 they tested. That gave them +7FPS @ avg 1920x 2xAA|16xAF in AoC. They only got their GTX 280 to 675 and that's still 73MHz over stock. We will see as user results start to filter in.

Also for both the GTX 280 and 260-

Looks like PhysX is going to have a larger impact in the near future-

"We also spoke with Brian Burke (Senior PR Manager) and Roy Taylor (Vice President of Developer Relations) on the phone and they had a ton of things to say about PhysX and were obviously all for it. They were happy to announce that 14 to 16 new PhysX game titles would be available before Christmas and double that next summer."

Other nice things about getting a 260 (or any other nVidia card) would kick in if you buy one from XFX or Evga.

If you get it from XFX you may transfer your lifetime warranty to another person. If you resell your cards when you are bored with them or to feed another purchase this fact will build value to your buyer. Aka you get to ask for a higher price. Other cards have their warranties voided when they leave the orginal buyers hands.

Evga have Step-Up so if nVidia release some uber card within 90days of your purchase you may trade in your card and pay the difference.

Both companies officially support overclocking, so you don't void your warranty by doing it. Both companies offer lifetime warranties. Both companies support users replacing their HSF without voiding their warranty.

I suspect nVidia will drop the price.

nvidia will hammered the market with phisx . it's the only advantage they have now in their hand. it will be a big **** guys ! some games will not include amd or intel solution so the physic will be severly downgrade.

But i don't want such cards at 600 buck. i can grab 2 at 200 and get same graphics performance. Intel & amd should spread their gaming physic solution.

IMO, SLI is overrated.

I personally recommend SLI-type setups to those users who prefer increased chances of BSDs, lock-ups, reduced airflow in their cases, and more noise. I also recommend this setup to ensure a chance that whatever game you might buy in the future might not even support it.

There are inherent advantages to a single-card, single chip solution on one graphics card and like most things in life, those advantages aren't free.

My quote from another thread.

About the Physx thing.

You may recall a recent article on Nvidia's offer to ATI. Nvidia gave ATI the opportunity to use PhysX if they took up CUDA. Well, the result from this offer has been agreed! ATI have decided to go with Nvidia; this is not a huge surprise as ATI could have been out of a job if it didn't take up PhysX. Nvidia could easily force it upon game developers.

You may also remember ATI showing off its R600 GPUs with a demo of falling bricks. This was designed to discourage Ageia. They claimed that the R600s could process physics better than the PhysX card itself. Now that Nvidia can run PhysX on CUDA, ATI should be able to do the same. Both sides need to work and improve this complex piece of code.

The Big Lime Greens will surely be the first with PhysX on their graphic drivers, but we are sure ATI will follow soon enough. ATI does have a good position at the moment; they have now joined with Nvidia's PhysX and Intel's Havok, a WIN-WIN situation.

ATI will support Physx too aswell as still being teamed up with Havok.

I have decided to wait 60 days,as the current cards from Nvidia, are not worth the asking price,IMHO.I do expect a price drop on both models of the GTX 2XX series to come soon.

NVDA,price the GTX280 @ 499 USD and I would buy one this weekend.As well,if the GTX260 was say @ 329 stock,to 359 USD for OC models,then I'd buy one right away.

For the first time in 4+ years I am seriously considering a ATI purchase. To be more specific, the 4870 series. When the 1Gb models start arriving,if NV has not taken steps to cut pricing by at least 15% across the board on the new 1.4 Billion tran monster, then I may go with the competition this round !

Unlikely (as I am a long time NVDA stock holder) but you never know.I applaud what the engineers at NV have done with this chip, its an amazing piece of tech,no doubt, but a tad too expensive given its performance relative to AMD/ATI's currently new offerings.Hopefully drivers will change this.Weeks ago,I was going to purchase a 280 right of the bat,as soon as they hit NCIX shelves, but I am back into collecting Anime dvd's these days, rather then gaming on the PC.Throw in my recent PS3 purchase...

Add in the fact I hardly game nowadays at all on the PC,and well....

Wow! If that's true that's a pretty big deal. If both AMD and Nvidia use CUDA that puts them in a pretty strong position against Intel since by the time Intel shows GPU accelerated apps CUDA should have a pretty strong hold on the market in that sector.

This is total speculation, but maybe, with the impending entrance of Intel into the GPU market we'll see an AMD/Nvidia teamup somehow? Things are going to be interesting in the not to distant future. One thing's for sure, Nvidia is going to have to do something, otherwise it will be facing off against two companies with potentially strong GPU/CPU offerings versus Nvidia's GPU only offering.

Wow that is truely great news, not only will it mean faster adoption of physx but CUDA as well. And it means there won't be a long drawn out battle to create a standard. I never thought I would see ATi agree to a nVidia API, but I am happy to see that they have.

CUDA and Physx were big reasons I wanted to stick with Nvidia, but if this turns out to be true I might just end up going AMD.

That's awesome. Maybe this guy could help the g80 guys out a little bit since Nvidia's holding out on us.
