It's not a requirement. I got mine working just fine using the included adapters on my old PCIE 1.0 motherboard.

With my new PCIE 2.0 motherboard, I was able to use the cables that came with the power supply instead of the adapters.

I already had a EVGA 780i mobo so the PCI slot was not the problem. I tried a 1000w Corsair PSU instead of the TX750. It worked like a charm. No issues at all. I would think I just had a bad PSU, but it works great with every other card out there. It might have something to do with the 6+2 pin PCIx PSU connectors. The 1000w is modular and has a direct 8pin PCIx PSU connector.

so i decided to go out and and buy a 750 watt coolmaster PSU, and after I installed it, I saw the new driver versions and updated them, the only issue i'm having now is thermal. I have to put a big floor fan blowing on my case in order the for gpu to stay below 200F.:thumbdwn: I don't know if it was the drivers or the new PSU, but the coolmaster 750watt has a 8 pin MB connector two 8 pin PCI-E connecter and two 6 pin PCI-E connectors. Nice PSU for $161 Does anyone think I should try a different GTX 280 from a different manufactuer, and if so, suggestion?

I've had the exact same problem the OP is describing when I first received my BFG GTX 280 OC: Worked fine in 2D, but a few minutes after I launched any 3D app, it black-screened my PC. I noticed the LED on the card was also turning red at this time.

I solved this by:

- Swapping out my 620W Nesteq PSU for a Gigabyte Odin Pro 1200W (I don't use SLI now, but maybe in the future, so I got the beefy model). Looking at its specs on paper, the Nesteq ought to be able to handle a single GTX 280, but in practice, it wasn't coping well. I chose the Odin because it's a very quiet PSU, thanks to its intelligent placement of heatsinks and temperature-controlled 14cm fan.

- Ripping out the heatsink+fan assembly and slapping on a DangerDen waterblock to water-cool it. The fan on this card gets way too loud for my liking under load. It had to go.

Everything is stable now, but these cards seem to have ridiculously strenuous power and cooling requirements. I refuse to use noisy computers so I was going to water-cool the card anyway, but I was just testing it first with the default air-cooler to make sure it wasn't DOA. Now it's silent and very fast, happy with my purchase.

i RMA my card, got a new one which works fine so far. it used to crash after showing artifacts, tearing and black, purple red dots/lines when playing intense 3D games. it seemed like it was a faulty core. crashing at measly 80-85 degrees celsius, now you cant call that overheating now can you?

I received my GTX 280 HC direct from EVGA and after installing it my X38 MB had the same trouble from day one--all 2D apps worked perfectly but as soon as I got into a game (Bioshock, Crysis, GoW,CoD4, etc.), within as little as 10 seconds to as much as 20 minutes I'd get a locked screen, then a black screen, and a few moments later a CTD with an error of "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered" in Vista 32 and a simple "application terminated" error in XP 32.

I went thru everything the OP did to try and fix it: talked to EVGA several times at length without success, tried a different MB (a 780i) and found it worked fine in that MB (as opposed to my Maximus Extreme).

So, sparing you the frustrating details and cutting to the chase--I finally found that after messing around with the BIOS settings ad nauseum--I FINALLY came up with a solid fix that has worked consistently thru every game for 48 hours now, in both Vista and XP. And while I realize my solution won't work for everyone, perhaps it will help one frustrated soul:

I found that if lowered my RAM (DDR3 PC1800) down a notch to the basic PC1600 presets (allowing stock PC1600 timing, etc.), the problem was solved. Overclocking with the rest of the BIOS settings has not lowered stability on my system and I've OC'ed it up to 4.2 GHz with no trouble, so I finally set it at a mild 3.61 GHz.

Again, just my solution to the irritating teething problems the GTX 280 seems to be causing on some systems--I hope someone can solve their problems with this simple fix.

I just picked up one of these cards but. I have a ****570w PSU with 2 x 12v rail at 16A each.

It runs an 880Ultra very well.

Can some one recommend a PSU for my 280 Gtx, so that it wont be blacking out on me.

As a matter of process, setting clocks to stock speeds is one of the first things you should do in situation like this.

Ok got the new GTX 280 Asus top edition and when trying to load Crysis PC would just shut off. Note if you have a O/C edition it will exceed the minimum recommended PS requirements. Most likely problem is your power supply not delivering enough amps to the 8pin connecter on the GTX 280. I used a second power supply (Generic 350W) to connect only to the 8pin connecter on my video card. Used the two 2 molex to 6pin adapter, then 2-6pin to 8pin adapter. Shorted out the two pins on the second power supply so it would turn on. Turn on the second power supply first then power on the computer. Tested Crysis and I can now play now stop. So now I'll have to do a bit of research and order a new power supply which can handle two gtx 280 for future consideration.

If running higher than reference clocks ( > 675 ) and there is that problem of simply the display going black randomly. I fixed mine by using the other DVI port, haven't had the problem since. I also found if using higher than 700mhz Core it happens more frequently when idling.

oke guys i had the same problems ( card crashes @ random moments ), contacted EVGA but their suport realy sucks!
so did some tests on my one but no results. updated my BIOS, Vista 64 and EVGA GTX 280 FTW drivers. again no results...

then i opened my case started to pick around on the 8pinE conector cable and
BOOM black screen...
first i thought it was the cable so I replaced it with an other one, even tryed other 8pinE connections on my PSU.
but still when I picked around on the cable my card shuts off, think it's a bad manufacture problem.

hope i helped some of you guys because i was getting pretty desperate 2 :)

I have evga 780i 4gig ddr2 800 gtx 280 ftw, efore i got my gtx 280 i had 2 8800gt's in SLI mode. No problems before i got the 280 ftw. initially everthing was o.k. but later after gaming online with friends "left 4 dead" computer will just reboot on its own without warning. did everything i could from decreasing my overclocking of cpu, ram, and even tryed another power supply. went from ultra x3 1600 watts to antec 1200 watt. still the same thing. placed the 280 in the other computer. No problems. So to resolve my problem i increased my voltage on my ram. auto was set at 1.85 but manufacture recomends 2.1. After that no problems.
