I just spotted Call of Juarez for 10$ on Steam. Now having a quadcore 8800gtx rig I can probably play this a lot better than I used to when playing the demo. But is the game worth the cash?

I have got it, I think yes, it's worth $10

Most certainly yes. It's a very good game, and for $10 only, its a must.

Yes, awesome game. Had it for a long time and it's just one of the most unique/original/interesting FPSes I've ever played. :)

I just bought it, couldn't stand for it anymore :D

I do have a problem with it though. The graphics look bad in a weird way. It's like it's "pointy" and dithering, like the vegetation is a cloud of points, not solid as it's supposed to. I'll be taking a screenshot in a moment. Does anyone know what the cause of this is? Bad Nvidia drivers? DX10 mode?

DX10 mode and bad drivers.
What set of drivers are you using ?

I can't find anywhere to read which version of Forceware I'm using :S

I believe it's the newest official anyway since I formatted 4 days ago. I think I found the problem. It's only apparent when I'm using FSAA, it doesn't seem to be affected by any other settings or DX9 or DX10 modes. Here's a few screens:

2X AA = ugly "pointiness":

8XQ AA = beauty! But big FPS hit :(

So does anyone have a suggestion for a good set video settings?

Setting 4XAA or even 2XAA just give me that ugly graphics you see above :(

Do you remember the additional settings? Such as the detail level of shadows, the size of shadowmaps etc?

Wow my impressions were right, DX10 is clearly superior to DX9, especially in texture and not least in lightning. I'm sad that's AA isn't possible with HDR apparently unless you use 8XQ AA, which is not playable in an all-maxed DX10 mode on a 8800GTX unfortunately. I'll have to do without AA in 1680*1050...

Honestly if they would have even used some DX9 shaders on some of those textures (particularly rocks) it would have looked a lot better without the huge fps hit that those DX10 shaders give... Guess that's what happens when you update a game engine that's over a year old, the non-updated part looks much worse than what it could have been.

I had the same problem when I played through CoJ in DX10 mode, so I left AA off.

For some reason i never passed 20% of that game .. i dunno .. lost interest after a couple of levels.

Hell yea its worth $10. I'm going to need to play through it again when I get a new card. This game made me feel like I was really in an old school western shootout. Great fun.

You can read the technical details on [H]OCP on why most of those effects was only feasible under DX10 rendering. Crysis screwed us on DX10 but that doesn't mean that DX9 is forever and always equal or superior to DX10.

I really miss AA but the lightning is just so much better in DX10 mode :(

The settings I ended up using btw is 1680*1050 all maxed except shadowmapsize set to 1024 and no AA in DX10 mode. It's look and plays awesome, but with one disadvantage being that sometimes the framerate gets horrible in indoor environments (ack)

Specifically yes some are only feasible under DX10. But there are clearly some things that could have been improved upon. Many rock textures to me appear to have no shaders whatsoever, just a fairly low resolution texture. They also have higher resolution textures for them in the DX10 version (which obviously doesn't require DX10 just to have higher res textures). It's more like comparing the graphics to other games or personal taste really. Just saying that there's so many ways they could have made the game look better without even going the DX10 route.

I got mine for $6.90 :D Awesome game. Not only it adds DX10, it changes a bit of overall game like reducing the sneaking missions (I think?) and added motion capturing stuff, to make game a bit more alive.
