Does he have to go SLI ? why not get a single 9800GTX+ ?

if he still has to go SLI i'd recommend 9600GT SLI. cheaper , cooler , efficient & less power hungry although the 8800GT is faster.

8800 GT for sure.

9600GT has lower PSU requirements, is quieter, and runs considerably cooler. However, a single 8800GT is 5-15% faster depending on the game. So if your friend has the PSU, go with 8800GT SLI. Otherwise, go with 9600GT SLI.

And no offense, but your friend is an idiot fanboy if he will only consider NV. The 4850 is better than any one of the single GPUs, and it's better than SLI in many ways due to no microstutter, or incompatibilities.

I'll never understand the desire to get two weak/mid range cards in SLI.

Maybe because two 9600GTs or even 8800GTs is cheaper than a single GTX280? And some of us just can't help be loyal to the green team. ;)

While I'm more than aware they are cheaper than the GTX280, he could spend a tad more and go with a GTX260, or actually spend less than that setup and get a 9800GTX/HD4850.

And I stand by what I said. Being loyal to one brand is idiotic. Be loyal to your wallet.

Well, I'd have to agree on the 9800GTX. I just got mine today! ;)

FYI the 9600GT scales for SLI like no other. The card absolutely ROCKS in SLI mode, and they O.C. quite a deal as well. Ive got mine up to a stable 750/1100MHz for the core/memory (linked shaders). And lets not forget that the 9600GT is one of the only cards which can take advantage of overclocking the PIC-E speeds in the BIOS!

As a matter of fact, @ over 17,400 points, I am pulling 3Dmark06 scores which match or better people with SLI 8800GTX/Ultras. And that's taking CPU and other factors into consideration (e.g. with the same or better PC components as me)! I am VERY happy with my current SLI set up with the 9600GT's. They allow me to play pretty much every game other then Crysis at full settings and at my LCD"s native rez of 1680x1050. It was a great buy and will continue to be so until I can afford a pair of GT260s.

...of course why not wait for the new 9800GTX+ which has higher clocks and a dye size reduction (vs the original 9800GTX)? At under $280.00 USD, thats a steal, and it's got quite the advantage over ANY 8800/9600 in terms of power and performance.

Overclocking the PCI-E buss? hasn't that been around for ages (geforce 7?). I still haven't seen a benchmark that shows its useful beyond that of marketing.

Is that why N-Force boards had data corruption with the crazy PCI-E frequency changing by itself and messing up the hard drives?

Considering that this is a pre-SP1 Vista issue, probably not.

Hello Everyone !
I just bought a 'XFX 9600GT XXX Alpha Dog Edition' yesterday. It recommended a 500Watt
power supply while mine was only a 250watt power supply. I installed the card on my computer to see if it worked. It worked but was very hot. So, I removed it out of the slot and when I was going to keep it back in the box, I got a burnt smell from where the power cable has to be connected to the graphics card.

Should I buy a new Power Supply Unit ? Will my card work ? it's only a day old and I can't afford to get a new one.

Please Help !!!!

If anybody has any suggestions, please email me at ashwinpilgaonkar@gmail.com

Thank you in advance.
