I have a ECS NFORCE4M-A motherboard and am thinking of purchasing a ATI 4870 video card. I have heard of some compatibility issues w/ NVidia chipset motherboards and ATI video cards. Any truth to this? I'd hate to fork out the cash on a new video card and have stability issues. My current 8800GTS 640MB card has served me well, but the the ATI's sure look good.

nForce 4 works fine with ATI mobos. However, I'd recommend a reformat, or at the very least driver cleaner/sweeper, going from one vendor GPU to the other.

You mean nForce 4 mobo works fine with ATI vid cards, right?

Just run Driver Sweeper, no need to reformat.

There is a hacked driver for crossfire to work with nforce 4 boards. I've read about people doing it and a lot of success stories. Try looking for the drivers, I'm pretty sure they're floating around still.
