What is the absolute best heatsink and fan to aircool a Q6600 to about 3ghz? I would prefer a more quiet approach rather than a fan spinning crazily (e.g. Vantec Tornado).

you might not need it. i use stock cooling on core duo and its still cool. check your temps first :D

If not i hear nexus zalman or scythe are great quiet coolers. My personal limit is 20dba - 30dba.

Xigmatek HDT-S1283, better and cheaper than the Zalman CNPS9700 and Thermalright 120-Ultra.

I got the Xigmatek because its dirt cheap in comparison, It does well but I wouldn't say its better than whatever, Then again Ive never used a TRUE

Apparently the TRUE bolt-thru is compatible with the Xigmatek
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/lgboforulula.html

The push pins on the Xigmatek are ****ed up!!!
It's not better, just cheaper.

No the Xigmatek is better. The reviewers have been testing heatsinks all wrong.

So It turns out if you have your tower case on its side a TRUE is the best , Otherwise not so good lol

OCZ Vendetta 2 is the BEST

9 out of 10 reviews state that the TRUE-120 is the hands down winner. You cant argue with those results. Plus I can confirm the awesomeness of said CPU cooler due to first hand experience and the hours of research I put in while looking for the proper cooler for MY Q6600.

Of course the TRUE-120 does NOT come with a fan, you need to supply your own 120mm fan. For that I strongly suggest getting the SilenX iExtrema-Pro 120x38mm, 90CFM/18dBA fan:

http://www.excaliberpc.com/571893/silenx-ixp-76-18-ixtrema-pro-120mm.html

90CFM @ a whisper quiet 18 dBA. You cant find a better ratio then that. With this fan on my TRUE-120, Im able to keep my Q6600 temps in check at 3.6GHz.

if you plan on only running 3 to 3.2GHz, this is way more then enough cooling power for you AND it fits perfectly into your need of a quiet running PC.

TRUE 120. workin great over here, not so much on my friends Q9300 though. that chip runs hot as hell. i can't imagine what it'd be on the stock cooler, he can't overclock at all it's so hot.

Well, I ordered myself the Xigmatek SD-964. It's light, its efficient and it's easy to install. It's also receiving good reviews...

Its ThermalRIGHT, NOT "ThermalTAKE". Thats a completely different company.

And here you go:

Actually, if you want the BEST of the BEST, *this* beats even the TRUE-120:

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/cpu/ifx-14/product_cpu_cooler_ifx-14.html?art=MTQyMywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_images/cpu_cooler/ifx-14/big/ifx-14-3.jpg

Surprise, surprise; It's still a Thermalright product! Heh.

This is designed to take at least TWO 140mm or 120mm fans (in fact you can have up to THREE. One in the center and two on the ends). Its surface area is much greater then the TRUE-120, and allows for better airflow due to the ease of multi-fan installation. It doesnt get any better then the IFX-14 with at least two high flowing 120x120x38mm fans (there aren't many high quality 140mm fans out there ATM, so skip those)!

Only issue is the size and weight... It's a *BIG* S.O.B.!

I SUGGEST NOOBS READ UP ON IT:
