View Full Version : Direct competition for NV35 on the way? New ATi product in ~2 months
Well I'll try to clarify things a bit. This is all according to Mufu.
The original r400 design that was scedualed for release this summer has been pushed back to next year and will probably be introduced in an enhanced form called r420.
R390 is based on the r300 architecture. It will have some new features,it will be on 0.13 and will also score high clocks.
It will be very very fast.
Mufu if I've quoted you wrong please feel free to correct me.:o

Sigh, so ATI is releasing a r350"Ultra" in 2 months.....then 2 months after that or something they are releasing r390? WTF!?
Can you say market saturation....I don't want to echo what people have already said, but this is ridiculous. How many new high end cards do we need per year?
So far it sounds like 3 cards from ATI(r9800Pro, r9800ProPro, r390) and 3 cards from nvidia(NV30, NV35, NV40(?) or NV35Ultra perhaps)
Nvidia and Ati seem like bad directors.
They need three takes to make it right!!:p

I think they're the same thing, but I could be wrong. As I heard it, the R390 is what the engineers are calling the R400 replacement (Since what was supposed to be the R400 was cancelled, and will be incorporated into the R500), and the marketing dept. refers to it as the R420. So now I'll call it the R390/400/420:D
That's exactly right. If you hear something referred to as "Loci", that's also the same ASIC.

R390 == R400 == R420 == LOCI ?
its a 0,13µm part, right? it has GDDR2 and 256MB ram.
will ATI introduce LOCI shortly after NV35 or later? fall/winter?
btw, the 425?Mhz/460Mhz 256MB FIC Radeon 9800PRO is NOT loci, right? its ATIs official anwer to NV35 ULTRA? ... is this the card that will run HL2 at E3?

Yes. The "new" R400, that is. The original R400 went on to form the basis for R500, as mentioned earlier.

Yes, yes and yes. Extremely likely, anyway. If it comes in Spring '04 or later then GDDR3 is a possibility.

Later - whenever NV40 debuts, AFAIK. So Nov at the earliest.

Correct.

Hmm... kind of. There are a number of options available to them. I think originally ATi prepared a 16-chip, DDR-II reference board for AIBMs to use in conjuction with fast, current revision R350 ASICs. Looks like they'll probably sell such a product themselves now ("Radeon 9900 Pro"?) and consolidate a higher default clock via an ASIC respin. Not sure it'll need to use GDDR2 though - they have probably overestimated the capabilities of the 5900 Ultra. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if such a product is never released.

No, that's a BBA 9800 Pro 256MB I think.

well from a marketing perspective it matters a lot.
I am not really a fan of just " Higher clocks", BUT...
If that ALSO raises the headroom of the overclocks ( a decent amount on average- like the 300-350 did...), even if it is just speed binned chips, then I guess it isn't SO bad ( relative)... although for obvious reasons we would like more..
We always do:D
Most folks just buy them to say they have the best... or of course benching wars.

OK MN that makes sense to me bro......... but the 9700p does almost as well as the 9800p....
Plenty good enough from what I have seen.
Not like going from a Rage pro to the 9700p.. heheh.
