well Nvidia can do the same simple thing. Increase clock speeds on both sides - core and memory. But i think probably core will do it.

:( I'm tired of Ati raising r300 clocks and say "Hey guys here is our brand new radeon 9800 extra pro!!

How about something NEW Ati!!!

well they can't that is the problem and cancelling the R400 will make it not better.
That will be a nice marketing war at the end of the year.
Pretty interesting to read the rage3d fanboy threads then.

I am prepared to have an interesting x-mas holiday while reading @ rage3d :)

um, yeah...

but in all reality's sake, the M64 and vanta were released MUCH AFTER the tnt series was already a burned out card family...

M64 and Vanta were out after GeForce. And before the GF2MX.

Clock boosts are all you can do to an existing architecture without having to completely retool it, really. I'm still looking forward to it.

How about something NEW Ati!!! Is it really all bad though? If speeds are clocked up and a few features may be added and the top price remains the same, for those looking to buy a new card its a good thing no?

Its understandable that those who have cards may not look forward to a faster card coming out. But there's always going to be something better down the road-its just a matter of time before it appears.

"How about something NEW Ati!!!" What do you want? DirectX 10 won't be out for a while.

Coming out with new architectures costs money and whatnot. Doing it this way can allow ATI to leverage more out of the architecture. ATI needs to make money.

How about a P.S/V.S 3.0 card?
I hate the fact that companys rely on the next DX release to bring out a new architecture.
Ati brought a new architecture every year.
The bad thing is that when a company takes the lead it tends to slow down in its production of new tech.
Thats why nvidia is in second place(Performance wise).
New architectures bring real speed upgrades.
And some new features would be nice!!
I haven't seen anything worth mentioning since fsaa.
Oh well!!Maybe I'm asking for too much.:o

Good thing the NV40 is scheduled for Comdex.

How about something new about once a year?

I don't think it's realistic to expect more than 1 new high peformance core a year, then with a re-fresh or two.

NV30---->refresh is the NV35, NV40 due in fall '03

R9700----> refresh is the R9800PRO, and a second refresh in a couple of months. R420 due is fall of '03

Considering that the NV30 was originally supposed to debut in the fall of '02, it appears as though nVidia is simply getting back on schedule w/ the release of the NV35 now and the NV40 in fall.

well the nv35 is actually ahead of the orginaly projected shedule, almost consider it a realllllly late nv30?

Most definatley not. The original NV30 refresh didn't even include a 256bit DDR bus. The NV35 in not only an NV30 re-fresh, but one w/ a 256bit DDR bus slapped on as well.

No, its R390 you're talking about.
R4xx is coming spring-summer next year.

What is this new ATI card? Is it the r390? Or jut an overclocked r9800Pro.

I think they're the same thing, but I could be wrong. As I heard it, the R390 is what the engineers are calling the R400 replacement (Since what was supposed to be the R400 was cancelled, and will be incorporated into the R500), and the marketing dept. refers to it as the R420. So now I'll call it the R390/400/420:D

Umm, no, it's much more than that.

I'm unsure the codename for the re-spun R9800 core, which will be a "clocked up R350"

The R390/400/420 is a different core, built on the .13 process. It will be *much* faster than the R350, and will compete w/ the NV40 this fall, if all goes according to schedule.
