Make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive and make sure clock and memory settings are correct.

For Vista

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

Now go down the page until you see the following lines in the XML file ...

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.
Save the file then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC.

You will have to select the profile everytime you re-start the computer.

Already posted it here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1697389&postcount=29)

But it certainly deserves a thread of its own if it actually works! :)

Works great, set 35% fan speed, idle's at 45-46c now.

Thanks for pointing this out. (urock)

Edit: With the fan at only 35%, quite quiet, I loaded up FurRenderingBenchmark and set it for stability test, after 10 minutes temperature topped out at 81c. This is fantastic, especially for only 35% speed on a stock fan and running Fur benchmark. And this was with 790MHz on the core.

For those of you who never ran Fur benchmark nothing hits a video card as hard as this.

Nice :) TBH I much prefer exhaust style cooling solutions, so I didn't want to have to opt for an aftermarket cooler if I didn't have to. This should allow for some nice overclocking :)

Actually you can opt in for Desktop icon (in profile manager) and then just throw the shortcut into the startup folder.
This will automatically launch that profile at Windows login...

Someone turn it up to 100%. Thats where the real fun begins.

If you want to make the fan settings stick so that you don't have to activate it every time you boot windows then do the following;

Create a new profile under the 3D tab and make the desired changes to it. This is the settings you generally use for gaming and as an example my default 3D profile (which i named normal) has AA and AF disabled. Once that is done, apply and save the profile. Now goto the profile manager and activate your 3D profile (Normal). When that is done, bellow, goto the Composition tab and under "the following setting" bit check that "3D" is ticked and then tick "Overdrive" as well. Now click save and make sure it overwrites it and then activate the "Normal" profile and hey presto it should work.

This works great... I bumped my fan from 23%-40%, and idle temps went from 80C to 50C.

I can hear wind blowing now... but now I can OC too. :afro:

You can just edit Profiles.xml and have the settings enabled by default instead muck up with user created profiles..

It works great, idle temp has lowered from 80šC to 50 at 35% speed, noise is minimal

Mine droped to 52 at idle at 35% fan speed and about 70 on load in my case now

Hey mate, when you go to create the profile, pick select all catalyst control center options...by default it only has a select few. Once you do that, your set :D

This mod rocks! Idle temps on my 4870s have dropped from 80/79 to 46/40 with the fan speed set to 40%.

@Xion X2

what brand is your 4870?

They're both VisionTek's. Only ATI brand that comes w/ a lifetime warranty which is why I got them.

Well when you turn your fan speed to manual, your locking in a fan speed. If you OC to far for your fan speed, you could actually end up with a hotter card and risk possible damage. This is a slim chance of harm since your system should reboot if the temps go past a threshold.

does anyone know if this hack can harm teh card it self in the long run?
