What does everyone think?

If you're building a gaming rig to play todays games, I'd go with the faster 512MB; if you're building a rig for graphics/rendering/DoomIII alpha I'd go with the 768MB of the slower stuff.

Personally I'd get the 512MB of the better stuff, you can always add more later and I find 512MB more than enough for everything I do. (Then again, I'm just a stay-at-home Dad who's merely a "hardware enthusiast"....according to the muchly lauded Peter Glaskowhathisname. :p )

Depends on the processor you're using. If it's a 333Mhz bus, definitely go with the faster 512. If it's a 266 bus, get the 2100.

512MB of PC3200, you'd be silly to get anything less at this stage in the game...

I have a 2.4gz P4 with a 533 fsb and 256 megs of pc2100 :)

But the mobo supports pc2700 as well.

I am a chicken about overclocking bc I can't afford to replace hardware when it is unnecessary. So pc3200 is not for me.

PC3200 will run at PC2100 or PC2700 speeds, but it also allows you to not buy more RAM when you upgrade to your next mobo that supports DDR400/200MHz FSB

plus here's some good inexpensive RAM

For the sake of this thread letís assume I have:

1 512MB pc2700 sim
1 256MB pc2100 sim

Which is better?

768MB at 266mz
or
512MB at 333mz

And there is no option to buy more memory or sell any.

go whatever the FSB of the mobo is running then...

1 x 512mb PC2700 will perform better, ESPECIALLY on a P4 which is bandwidth greedy

The fast 512MB solution, it's a no-brainer. :)

Yeah but if he has a dual DDR board then PC2100 is all that is needed for a 533MHz FSB Pentium 4. so long as he has 2 sticks of the same memory aka 512 + 512MB or 256 + 256MB.
