man i wish i got me job since the 2gb version goes for 4400 approx. in Swedish currency
as of now i canīt afford one even if sold my HD4870 wich i donīt want to since i have the GIgabyte GA-EX38 DS4 board i guess i can go Crossfire with a 4870+4870X2 but thus i donīt know how the setup will perform
i have the antec P190 and it should have enough power to run 1 HD4870+1HD4870X2?

I have also thought about the possibility: 3xCrossfire with the 4870 and the x2, but I think this setup has one problem: the 4870x2 has two 4870s with 1 Gb memory each, while the standalone 4870 is limited to 512 Mb, so I don't know if the 512 Mb card could limit the whole system in extreme resolution & AA conditions, maybe half of the memory of the 4870x2 would be "lost"

that is good possibility, when you use SLI or CF every core needs access to same data.
so you would end up with 3x512mb.

hmm but there is 1gb HD4870īs would that change the picture?

Yep, that would change it, but mine is the 512 mb one
BTW if anyone wants one particular game to be tested on the 4870 and the x2 let me know it in this thread, this is the list of games I have currently installed on HD ready to run:
Alone in the Dark

Thanks LordJuanlo, yes it costed a smaller fortune, though I donīt have space for two desktops, besides this one is easy to just take with me if I go to a friend or anything, instead of dissasemble the whole desktop with all the cords and monitor :). I usually play LAN at home with a friend, thereby I need to powerful systems.
I look forward to those 4870x2 benchmarks.

Tomb Raider Legend, The Witcher, Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's Creed... all those games have been used in my previous bench, so they will be benchmarked again when I get the 4870x2.
BTW it's here

While we know that the DMC4 and AC scale (still want your results though), I wonder if TRL and TWtchr will.

you are one lucky guy i wish i had that card but i think that it would not come to itīs right use when i can only game at 1680x1050 so at that rez i think the single HD4870 is enough or even more than enough
now get that card fired up and more images of the monster :)

ASUSEN7900GTX, for 1680x1050 any of these cards is more then enough: 8800gtx, gtx260, 4850, 4780, 9800gtx.

ok great now i know i am in no hurry to get me a second card as of yet enyway :)
I am running a HD 2600XT Crossfire setup right now and spend a lot of time playing LOTRO: Shadows of Angmar. Could you post how the 4870X2 does with that game? I am looking to do a 4870 Crossfire implementation or maybe even get crazy and do a 4870X2 Crossfire setup in the future.
Also on the single 4870 that you tested LOTRO with before, how was the performance? Did you have any of the dreaded "hitch" that a lot of people (including myself) suffer from on that game? Love the game and if I can get rid of the hitching in DX10 mode that will be more than worth the upgrade.
Thanks!

Marll, you will be much better off wtih 4870, single GPU. should perform better then your CF setup that you have now.
See how the single GPU handles, and if you do need more juice you can always grab a second 4870.
I agree that I would be better off, but also just wanted to see what the impressions were of someone that is already playing LOTRO.
I will likely upgrade anyway, but don't have the money quite yet.

my point was, since you have CF board, and 4870X2 CF would be huge overkill.
instead of buying single X2, you could grab 4870 for about 240 (after rebate, there are still few around) and if required could always get a second one.

It's not easy to take the same exact screenshot, because when using Swift Travel the "landing" location is not exactly the same, you may appear a meter to the left, right, forward or backward, so I've tried to adjust as much as I could. BTW on this game I have noticed a bit of micro-stutering until I removed fraps overlay. No other game had that problem.
from the sound of the stutter/hitch was caused by Fraps. I believe you will fine with single card.

Hi Marll, in LOTRO DX9 performance is outstanding, framerate is very high even with high levels of AA and AF, I would say the card scales pretty well here. But I'm interested in DX10 and unfortunately DX10 is broken since Book 14 patch. I would say that one single 4870 card (not x2) is more than enough for LOTRO, but I really hope the fix DX10 soon
