View Full Version : Is it possible for Nvidia to make their own CPU?

Intel won't allow Nvidia to make mobos for Nehalem cpu which means we will be forced to get x58 Intel chipset, but then we can't run SLI?
AMD CPUs are not in pair with Intel right now, but they are not really that behind.

Nobody talks about this...but this is totally not good. Since Intel is acting very gay, i wish Nvidia manages to make CPU which is going to smoke Nehalem and then Nvidia can say, Intel people eat that...

AMD can make huge profit out of this by letting Nvidia to continue in making chipset for AMD platforms and support for SLI, and suddenly a lot of people are ended up with AMD systems and SLI Nvidia cards...which would increase AMD Cpus sale big time.

No because people's PSUs won't be able to handle it...

I wasn't trying to be rude, all i suggested basically was to unplug one card and run system and to see if it's going to lock. How hard is that?

I hope Intel won't give nVidia the license for the new platform. This might force nVidia to finally open SLI for Intel boards and that would be the perfect combination.

AFAIK nVidia doesn't even have a x86 license.

but since they supposelly teamed up with VIA, they always could make some deal with VIA, for nvidia to make the CPU and to be sold under VIA brand.

That is a possibility, but can you imagine Jen ever allowing for that to happen?

Besides, VIA may not agree, because they may loose the license themselves (although I'm not sure if that would be the case, not sure what the agreement is for the X86 licensing)

Answering the OP question;

Yes they probably can, no they probably wont

Yeah, they are more likely to promote CUDA to sell more graphics cards than to try to compete with Intel or AMD.

I'd buy Intel or AMD long before I'd buy an nvidia CPU. I love their graphics cards and their chipsets have been fine for me in the past, but AMD and Intel have been making x86 CPUs for more than 25 years. I wouldn't trust any other company's product to be as stable, fast or reliable.

Just like I'd hesitate to go with a new graphics card company if one suddenly popped up to compete with nvidia and ATI.

What if IBM made a graphics chip? That would be like Nvidia making a cpu. ;)

They can make a PSU to run it, but you'll have to plug directly into the fuse panel to power it. :D

NVDA will make SLI available to Intel and in turn they will get the license to make the sets to support the new Intel Chip. Even though Intel is in the wrong because they are violating contract, I just can't see Nvidia pressing the issue any longer in light of their current business position.

As far as a x86 cpu that's a tough one. They cannot just buy out AMD or VIA and get the license because the clause in the licensing agreements bars the transfer of x86 if the purchasing company doesn't already have one. So NVDA cannot buy one. Intel won't give them one. Looks to me like Nvidia would have to go a different route with a CPU.

I guess IBM could buy Nvidia and let Jen do what he does best. If that were to happen then I would start to worry if I were Intel.

Heh, I wouldn't buy an IBM GPU right off the bat. No way.

Have they ever made video chips before? :p

If Intel GMA and VIA UniChrome are any indication of the quality of graphics chips made by CPU and chipset manufacturers, then count me out. :p

If I'm not mistaken.....aren't Nvidia a fabless company?

Does that mean that they really make sweet **** all?

CPU companies that are Fabless.......none!

They don't have a fab.
Nvidia sucks at anything but making GPUs, leave it to the pros
nobody but you would buy it

yea, but it would cost more money, since the x86 license was non-transferable, according to sources online.
