View Full Version : Best free DVD ripper?
I'm looking for a free DVD ripper that will rip the DVD and convert it into DivX format. In the past I use to have one program for ripping the DVD and another to convert the ripped file into DivX format but I forgot which programs I used after a format. :headexplode:

I could never get a clean cut answer to this question for so long but i see folks doing demos with this and it works decently.

QFT, Bigman. The best stuff I have found I have only used long enough before the demo runs out. :/
I don't mean to sound like a freakin advertisement, but...
The only one I use is XVid4PSP (http://winnydows.com/news.php). Although the name may imply that it's for PSP, it practically converts everything I've thrown at it to pretty much any format you can think of. Blackberry, PSP, PS3, XBox 360, you name it.
And the best thing is, is that it's free. It's the only converter I use. I used to use all of the programs seperately, but XVid4PSP has the same programs I had in a neat little package already. Plus it's more user friendly and really robust for the more experienced. :)
Just launch the program and use DGIndex to index the DVD. Then trim (or resize it to whatever you like), then convert it to whatever format you like. I use the 4.1.1.5 version right now since the new 5.+ version is still getting ironed out.
The guy (winnydows) also bangs out updates like no tomorrow, so it's always being worked on. If you don't believe me, check out the Maxconsole forums since he frequents there a lot. His updates are usually posted there and at qj.net as well. Also, you can get the 4.1.1.5 version at qj.net (in the downloads section) since he doesn't offer it on his site anymore.
A bit of advice... stay away from payware programs! Why pay for something when you can do the same exact thing and even more with freeware that's been out since forever?
All of the trial versions I have tried for converting videos suck really bad - they don't even offer full resolution converting for PSP. Plus they only offer restricted bitrates and passes even if you pay for the full version! :( I've been burnt before, so now I'm a little wiser about stuff like this. I would recommend never using any of those since it's usually a one man operation and getting support for it sucks really bad. I was lucky to get a full refund after I had pointed out that it wouldn't convert to full 480x242 resolution for my PSP. And it only converted to a specific type of MP4 format which got outdated with newer PSP firmware updates. And the guy never updated his program to support it! Now the PSP supports full 720x480 resolution, and it's freakin awesome knowing that XVid4PSP supported it from the get-go. The guy really knows his stuff.

I never have found a good free windows solution either. I use my linux box and there are plenty of free options and you will never have to worry about some jackass trialware.
@shilk I may have to give that one a try.

U want to pay for that too?
Ent ent.
Not even buddy.
I will stay with my traditional dvd rom macro removal do the copy from dvd over manually and use sonic or windvd copy 8.
I guess he missed the note about it being free.
XVid4PSP has DVDShrink which also bypasses copy protection and you can also cut out all of the stupid crap and trailer nonsense. :)
I use it all the time and trim my DVD for re-encoding for my PSP. You can even select the subtitles so you can encode it to work when encoding to .PMP format (PSP's native video format). The result is godly quality and subs for when you can't watch it full blast. :p

I use DVD Decrypter but it was not updated since March 2005 so probably better choice is DVDFab HD Decrypter. Both are Freeware and highly ranked.
