I'm seriously thinking about getting a 4870, for a 260GTX I'm have to spend an extra $100 PLUS upgrade my PSU, the 4870 should be ok with my 550HE. Also to take into consideration my SLI motherboard.

On a side note, it's ****ing freezing here and my CPU is idling at 10C LOL.

I think the GTX260 uses less power than the 4870...

The 4000 series still run pretty hot and use a lot of power. They're just cheaper, not really any more power efficient.

The GTX280 is power hungry though.

I am using the Antec Sonata III case with the Earthwatts 500 PSU from Antec. It is a very gentle 500 watt with 2 PCIe power connectors on it.

It seems to be doing the job.

Besides. My box says it recommends a 500 watt or better PSU. If you are using a decent brand you have more than enough.

Hotness wise? I would have to say that it has the accoustic and thermal properties of the majority of the overclocked 8800GT's out there and about the same overall powerdraw as an 8800GTX.

According to the online shop I was at is stated the GTX260 needed 1 6 pin PCIE and 1 8 pin PCIE and it needed to be 600watt and up, my PSU only has 2 6 pin PCIE connectors, which is fine for the 4870 which also states it will get by with a 500watt PSU.

Aye, this is why i didn't want to go for the gtx either...i will have to get a new PSU...which i really didn't need just yet.

I am going to get the Gigabyte 4870 + Zalman GV1000 (nana2). Then just see how far it can o/c...temps shouldn't be an issue with that heatsink..

That annoying sound on heavy load on NVidia (8800GTX, GX2) is on ATI too? Hope not...

What?

I'm comparing the GTX260 and 4870?! I never once mentioned the GTX280. I know it's the best, but I'm not even considering it as I'm only gaming at 1680x1050 with 2AA-4AA at most.

The point is you paid for your GTX 280 $650 and even NVIDIA did find out the card has a hard time to sell at that price with HD 4870 not so far behind in performance like you would like as to believe.

The other point why can you just be happy like others who either did buy one off the NVIDIA or ATI card, posting all this trolls sure doesn't show you're happy with the purchase.

Furthermore we all know (except you) that from ATI this is not the top card in this series and there is more to come. On other hand NVIDIA did come out with top card and can't improve much on it without shrinking it and that will take little time.

So if all the prediction are right ATI will have in few days top performance card, the sad story is,
we all will know except you.

I'm really happy with GTX280. It's an excellent performer. Yeah we all know HD4870X2 is coming. Two HD4870 chips slapped together. It would pointless to compare single GTX280 vs 2 HD4870. I'm not sure how Crossfire will scale, but i hope reviewers compare SLI GTX280 vs HD4870 X2. As far as price goes...people buy what they can afford it.

NO. THE GTX 280 > 4870. THE 4870 IS DOG POO on the sole of your shoe. The 4870x2 is just two pieces of poo slapped slapped together. YOU HAVE TO BUY TEH NVIDIA, or else you will never be able to kill the gollem or screw the wood nymph.

Fantasy is a normal, healthy part of sex for men and women. In fact, many specialists claim that a rich fantasy life leads to better sex but please go with your sex fantasies to the open forum. :)

This tread is about "My experience with HD 4870" not your sex fantasies. :)

HD 4870 doesn't need to be dressed up as gollem to be sexy. :)
In mather of fact it performs as gollem. :) Well I'm not sure about the sex part, never took it to bed yet. :)

Don't worry about it. Your e-penis is all that.

HAhahaha.

Listen. The 280 is the fastest single GPU card on the planet. Yes. You own one.

The only thing wrong with the card is the price. And some overheating some people get. But whatever. Everyone's system is different.

I love my 4870 so far. Would I love a GTX280? ... Frick ya!

I personally (as do many) feel the price needs to be around $450 for the 280. That's all that is negative about the 280. I wanted a super fast card and would have considered the 280 but not over $450. 4870 is too close at $299 or less.

GTX260 is now a worthy card at $299 IMO. Had it been that price when I was shopping? I would have had to think about it.

I probably would have gotten the 4870 just to throw a thanks to ATI . They really delivered a different price point for performance for us all no matter what brand you like.

They deserve some respect for that.

Given the performance figures they could have released the 4850 at $289 and the 4870 at $399. But luckily for all of us regardless of brand preference, they did'nt.

Here's a toast to ATI!

Good work.

That sound can happen on any piece of hardware under load, I used to get it on my 8800GTX, I now get if from my motherboard. So yeah, it could happen with any video card you buy.

Dunno... the fan doesn't speed up, if that's what you mean. Mine's stuck at 35%, which is audible but not loud.

I can't hear my 4870. If the house is hot and the game is heavy I can hear it if I try. My DVD drive is louder when it spins. A TV at regular listening levels would drown it out.

But I really dont know how loud an 8800GTX is.

Hello all!!

Im new to the forum, the reason i registered is because im having some trouble with my new HD4870 (from Power Colour *color for the states), after extensive research into a number of nVidia cards and ATI i found this to be amazing value for money and looking at the statistics on 3dguru it looked amazing, when i final got it through the post it didn't disappoint. Although a bit of trouble installing (alll my fault) resulting in a small fire! i got it all working, but no sound.

It seems to have tapped into my on-board sound and i cant get it back neither do i know how to access it from the card, im using Vista 32bit system, which displays my sound icon which has changed to a small HDMI symbol (with a screen), i thought simple enough ill just use a HDMI cable.

I started using a DVI to HDMI cable (no converters), and resulted in no sound, tried re-installing my old sound driver still no dice. and a number of other settings suggested on other forums (but not for my problem). I've also heard that i have to configure my sound, but no alteria options are given when i go to the configure list. The HDmi is working properly and i can see the sound ways. I have orderd another HDMI to DVI convertor so that i can use on my monitor (22" HP x2207) and one on the card itself(the one that came with the card).

Can anyone help with this problem..

(on a side note I'm really happy with its performance, been playing Crysis on complete High settings and still getting 50fps, the Power Colour seems to be running a little colder out of the box that others as well as I'm getting 50'C idle and have never seen it go above 70'C)
