View Full Version : My experience with HD 4870
The 30% fan setting is not any strain, the problem is the Fan Hack eliminates the auto control.
So the danger of overheating is more possible. I guess that is why ATI didn't implement such option in drivers. Few people looking for ultra quiet PC would likely destroy the card.
Such low setting sure depends on how good the case ventilation is and on the room temperature. Anybody with such low manual fan settings should be checking the 3D temp much more often.
Gainward ExpertTool ATI v4 (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1747670&postcount=6) also includes the Fan Control but the Fixed Speed (Manual) setting is limited at 50%, I believe exactly for safety reasons. So the only option there is to run the card more noise or go for the auto settings, that's why I uninstalled the tool.

Leave it set at "automatic" in the profile, just set the fan speed. My fan still ramps up when needed. Although according to some posts at Rage this doesn't appear to work for everyone

i did a second vantage run with aa ad set to 4x in CCC and at the very last test i got some strnage lines like a grid or so and the card was at 92degrees isnīt that a bit too high to let the card determine the fan speed as i feel 92 degrees is a bit too high?
iīm using the 8.9 betas
now a few minutes or so ago it is at 86 degrees
is it still not recommended to use the fan hack?

well does riva work on ATI?
the only way to turn up the fan is via a hack and it is said not to be safe for the card in the long run so
this was in DMC 4 DX10 it goes down in temp but 94 degrees is it good at all with the hack or not?

RivaTuner works just fine on ATI. Just make sure you download the 2.10v. I'm running it right now.

and you can use the fan thing without profiles and stuff and it is safe to use?

40-45 fixed should do it. Make sure to check "run at windows startup" and make sure the program runs when Windows starts. Otherwise the fan fix won't work.
Just ignore those who are telling you not to use the fan fix. They have a bunch of speculation but no real proof that it hurts the card. Every high-end graphics card can fluctuate wildly in temps between idle/load. The GTX280s do it, too.
If you're seeing lines or "grids" on your screen with high temps, that's cause for worry. Use the fan fix/hack to bring them down.

ok so i checked the star with windows and in autostart it is checked
right now it is near 30% since it is late and the comp is in our bedroom so i canīt have sound like a F-16 or so.
so i guess XP is good to go now tomorrow i willd do the same in Vista

My 8800GT was in a few degrees of that.
My 4870 hits about 92C in DMC4 but not the first bench. Like the third one or whatever. But it is only 22C in the room.
Alot of it seems to be dependant on the ambient room temps and airflow in the case. Mine kinda sucks. It's and Antec Sonata III with only a rear 120mm fan set to medium.
Idle is 77C when the room is 22C (room temp). When it was summer and over 26C in the room, the idle was at 80C and the fan was running a touch higher. DVM4 reached 94C once. But only on a day when it was almost 30C in the room. Again. I have crappy airflow and 30C is punishing regardless. My 8800GT would easily have matched these temps as well.
