View Full Version : NV35 will need massive cooler?

I wonder has anyone got an idea on what type of cooling system the graphics cards based on the NV35 (GeForce FX 5900 Ultra) chipset will use.
Will it be that infamous air raid siren cooler that plagued the boards based on the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra chipset? :lame: Will it be something similar in size but much quieter, like the Outside Thermal Exhaust System (OTES) cooler used by Abit for their overclocked GeForce4 Ti4200-8x cards?
Or has nVidia designed the NV35 so it runs quite a bit cooler than the original NV30 design, so it only needs a smaller cooler fan like that you find on ATI's Radeon 9700 Pro/9800 Pro cards?

From what I've heard not only will it have a reasonable cooling solution, it's also only gonna take up one slot!
Weird, eh? ;)

represents the nv35. it will take two slots.
i think thats great, btw. ive long wished that someone built cooling to take advantage of the space, because frankly i havent had that space available since the BlueOrb cooler i put on my Voodoo3! people complaining about that are just looking for something to complain about because most motherboards cannot use the first PCI when the AGP bus is used (they share resources. either is supposed to be used for your PRIMARY graphics card. but not both. using both can cause ACPI and IRQ errors and also busmastering and even optionROM checksum issues because graphics cards have bootable optionROMs and often motherboards dont have enough room in their optionROM space for both. but perhaps newer chipsets address this.)
also IMO i prefer flowFX to the newer solution. now im not saying its for everybody, but for example, i have dual Athlons and thus a heat issue. the flowFX is the first solution to expel its heat to the rear of the case. i had actually planned to replace flowFX, but have since decided that its such a hi-quality and expensive implimentation and its really not loud to me.
also , many users keep their towers on their desktop. when you work professionally ,you learn to put the tower under the desk because of noise and also because you want room on the desk for papers or specs or whatever. its a waste of space.
lastly the case matters too. alot of users are on these 'light and cool' aluminum cases now and theyre not built for sound insulation whatsoever. my Antec case is really solid and so it doesnt reverbrate the sounds from within like a Lian-Li built for carrying to lanparties.
there is the noise issue and its valid for those that are into silent computing like water-cooling. but the latest revisions of flowFX are quite mellow and i only hear it when it kicks in (and i smile, personally. i like the sound of my gear kicking in. like a turbo booster).

I'd seen that photo on another site, but they mentioned that the picture was a engineering sample sent to review sites and the finished product would only take up one slot. :)

Yes i saw that too, the final revision will take 1 slot, and it will dump all that heat into your case like the radeons.

could it be that it only takes up one slot... but a MASSIVE slot :D
perhaps the slot referred to is the size of 2 normal slots :D

No, it was definately meant in a "one normal slot" kind of way....although I wouldn't put your idea past nVidia's PR dept! ;)

xbit confirms its a 1 slot solution
vrnews also thinks that the final solution will be clocked at 450/450 (at least the ultra) and take up only one slot.

That's good news. One less thing people can whine about, even though none uses the first pci slot anyway ;)
Still whining about it..*sigh* :D

Im actually excited to see the Gainward nv35 GoldenSample + CoolFX, i bet you can get 550core easy

the sad thing is that Gainward will have to redesign the CoolFX for 256 MB NV35 cards :(

I am grateful for the comments about the potential cooling systems for the boards based on the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra chipset (NV35 chipset).
I still think a variant of the Abit OTES cooling system (but with a much quieter cooling fan! ) would be the best solution for this board. That way, the GPU will be constantly cooled by cooler outside air, instead of recirculating warmer air inside the system case.
I believe the original CoolFX design didn't work that great because the fan had to be run at a very high speed to cool the way-overclocked NV30 chip, which results in a very noisy fan. :lame:

You are quite a pathetic troll. You don't even know what you are trolling... The CoolFX is a water cooling unit that is NEAR SILENT.
Watch your words guys

the price of the gainward fx and the coolfx is near 1k...people could get a 9700pro and a prometeia to cool it for about the same price, it wont be silent, but it will be around -30c degrees :D
