This is a bit stupid IMHO... 1 gb should be more than enough, and it would fit better on the 4870

Agreed. IMO they would be much better off focusing their efforts toward the 1GB 4870.

Yep, all well and good but not at all if they don't deliver the 1GB 4870's (which smart people actually want and there is a use for). At least the 4850 isn't a low end card, but seriously, FFS put it on a high end card.... I guess the other reason they wouldn't do it with a 4870 is GDDR-5.
