OK so I have mine up and running. Everything I play is smooth and for some reason CoD4 at the same settings as the GTX 280 seems to be smoother. Maybe it's my imagination or something.
It's too bad these cards don't do that well with the Folding@Home GPU client. The GTX 280 used about 6-7% CPU and is much faster. The 4870 uses about 25% and is about 1/3rd the speed. They need to fix this.
I have the HIS 4870. I had the VisionTek but it ran really hot, even with the XML fan fix. This one runs much cooler and the memory overclocks better. I hope they release something to overclock and be able to control the fan and GPU voltage.

its because ATI cards dont tear like nvidia cards do. Thats why it seems smoother at the same speed. Nvidia cards tear so bad you need vsync.

It does very well running COD4.
I've always thought ATI > NV when it comes to IQ.

Tearing problem is more related to monitor you have. I used to have Samsung 20" LCD. It was highly rated monitor, but to me it was garbage. When i switched to Viewsonic 22" Wide Screen which i use for almost two years tearing was gone. And it was the same Nvidia card running on both.

From the Folding forums, the AMD client was developed ground up for stability first and then they speed it up.
Nvidia went for the pure speed route which is why there were so many issues to begin with, and then they will work towards greater stability.

That's always the case whether it is dealing with graphics or data.

tearing has always been more prevelent for me with Nvidia cards. it has nothing to do with the monitor unless you have a crap monitor. Im using a 22" Acer X222

24" 1920x1200 everything maxed on COD4 and my gtx 260 was loafing. I turned off vsync and never saw any tearing. FPS were thru the room except on a few custom maps.

Screen tearing has NOTHING to do with the quality of the monitor and everything to do with the framerates you're getting in a game compared to the monitor refresh rate. Anytime your in-game framerates exceeds the monitor refresh rate, there's a potential for screen tearing. Since LCD's have a 60Hz refresh rate, the chance of tearing is higher than it used to be with high quality CRT monitors, unless you use V-sync. Going from a Samsung 20" LCD to a Viewsonic 22" LCD wouldn't change anything at all as both monitors have a 60Hz refresh rate.
