I haven't even owned this GTX 280 for a month, yet it looks to be left in the dust once the 4870 X2 is released in August. I've been a computer gamer since the early 80's, and I know how quickly technology changes, but this is utterly ridiculous. Even with the recent price cuts, the current GTX 280 looks to be a dead duck. I do love the performance of the card, but I thought it would take more time before the next greatest card would come and beat it. The 8800 GTX was on top for almost two YEARS, yet the GTX 280's reign will be limited to two MONTHS! I'm not so sure it's wise to invest in a top-performing video card anymore. Now that ATI and NVIDIA are at each other's throats again, the performance crown will go back and forth. Still, I like the idea of a single vs. SLI or dual-chip design as the single GPUs are free from those stuttering problems common in SLI and the 9800 GX2

Just enjoy your card and forget the race to be #1. Sheesh. ;)

This has been discussed in several other threads. i can only see this thread bringing more unnecessary troubles & fanboy attacks.

Dont bury your EVGA Superclocked GeForce GTX 280 card, just RMA the dead card for a brand new replacement.

HD4870X2 is just crossfire of two HD4870 so your GTX280 is still fastest the card. If you want get another GTX280 run SLI and smoke the **** out of HD4870X2 :)

Dude, enjoy the card...it's amazing performer...

If there is something that i have learnt, it's that i must buy my hardware when i'm going to enjoy it. You can't live thinking about the future upgrades, cause always there is something new around the corner in computer's world.

Sorry, but I was being a little facetious here. The GTX 280 is going to be more than adequate to run the latest games for a while and will still be the fastest single-GPU available until the 55nm version arrives soon enough. I really like this card, despite its high price. A lot of times gamers get obsessed with having the fastest card out there. I have never bought the fastest available card at launch before. My 8800 GTS, 6800 GT and 5900 served me well. I'm hoping the GTX 280 will do the same.

Just enjoy the card...sweating who has the fastest will make you crazy. I went from an 8800GTS 640 to a 7900GTX for a while, back to an 8800 and now my very inexpensive 9800GTX. My games play and look just fine and that's a kick ass card you got...just enjoy it!

Yeah i love my EVGA SSC 280GTX... the next ATI card will draw too much power and emit too much heat. Its not for me, therefore i will be happy with my 280 :)

Exactly. Have fun now and play until the games you want to play at high details start to slow you down; try not to let the market tell you when to upgrade, let your games tell you.

Read how its design is different from normal crossfire and try again.

Anyways enjoy you gtx280 :). Mine is working great so far at 2560x1600 (although like you said I'll be dumping the gtx280 for hd4870x2 soon).

Will 4870X2 be recognized as CF the same way GX2 is recognized as SLI?!

We should know shortly. I think the NDA lifts Tuesday.

And when the 4870x2 is released in August, it might very well be pushing up daisies as the performance champ by November, buy even earlier. So what is the point? You by new high end tech, it gets cheaper and faster in short order. That's the norm, not the exception.

+1

The phrase "Future Proof" is a joke in regards to hardware, unless of course the future you refer to consists of a span of 3 to 10 weeks. Turn fraps off and forget about frames per second and just enjoy your games

Wa wa wa... If you want to stay on top then buy the newest and best all the time. If money is an issue then don't complain :p This is why I only uypgrade when I can't enjoy top settings for games anymore. No point staying on top for just the sake of staying on top unless you got the $$$ to burn.

If HD4870X2 has fixed microsuttering then the card might be wonderful. I still think SLI scales better then crossfire. And Nvidia will drop the price for GTX280 down to $400 with rebate maybe even $375 in order to compete HD4870X2. In my case i will be getting second GTX280 :)

By reading your other posts, I would have never guessed you would go with a second nvidia card before an Ati card. :) :p
