Looks like the initial Nehalem is going to be much cheaper than many predicted.
I'm in for the mid-range one or maybe after skipping few upgrades I might be even deserving the Extreme edition. :)
Initial Intel 'Nehalem' CPUs as cheap as chips

Pssst! Want an Intel 'Nehalem' processor on the cheap? Well, just go and ask the chip giant for one. It's 2.66GHz 'Bloomfield' CPU has been price at just $284, it has been claimed.
That's the batch price, of course. To get it, you'll have to buy a 1000 CPUs at once - boxed Bloomfields will come in slightly higher than that.
As previously reported, the 2.66GHz Bloomfield - Intel's desktop Nehalem - will also be made available in 2.93GHz and 3.2GHz versions. The pricing, posted by Chinese-language site HKEPC, confirms the latter will be an Extreme-branded gaming PC part - it'll cost $999. The mid-range Bloomfield will cost $562.
All Nehalem CPUs will require new motherboards, thanks to their inclusion of an on-board memory controller capable of connecting to DDR 3 memory. They also use Intel's new QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) bus and fit into 1336-pin sockets.
Currently, the only Nehalem-friendly desktop chipset known to be in the works is the X58, based on the 'Tylersburg' chipset.

Are you able to be happy about something without predicting AMD is going to be doomed.
Use your brain, if AMD is doomed there is no longer cheap Nehalem or
cheap NVIDIA Graphic card with any decent performance.
Now this wasn't so difficult to figure out.

don't care how cheap the CPU is, DDR3 price is still to expensive, i will wait.
<3 AMD....
On topic....i am curious to see how the 2.66 goes up against the 3Ghz....just for comparison to see how well they managed to make it work well...

Sounds good. I wonder how much the current q6600 will drop once this comes out. What is the expected release date?
lol Yeah £143 when it comes out more like £800 for the 3.2GHz £650 for the 2.93GHz and £500 for the 2.66GHz

I hope you're wrong.
Initially the retail prices are going to be higher than the quoted prices in the article per 1000 chips.
The lowest priced 2.66GHz 'Bloomfield' is supposed to be mainstream version.
500.00 GBP = 996.784 USD, this doesn't look to me like mainstream CPU price.

Looking good, same pricing info today at DigiTimes (http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20080717PD222.html)
Intel Bloomfield CPU pricing reveals pleasant surprise
Monica Chen and Ricky Morris, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Friday 18 July 2008]
In order to speed up adoption of quad-core CPUs, Intel is planning to offer its upcoming 3.2GHz Extreme series Bloomfield processor at US$999 in thousand-unit tray quantities, US$500 cheaper compared to the current top-end Core 2 Extreme QX9770 which sells at US$1,499, according to sources at motherboard makers.
In the past, Intel had always priced its flagship Extreme model at US$999, but recent product launches saw the company abandon its traditional pricing scale, and introduce even steeper prices. The news that Intel seems to have returned to its old ways is likely to be good news for enthusiasts expecting to pay a hefty premium to own the latest high-end system.
In addition to the 3.2GHz Extreme CPU, Intel will also introduce a performance version clocked at 2.93GHz and quoted at US$562, and a mainstream model running at 2.66GHz and carrying a price tag of US$284. All three models will run on X58 chipset motherboards with the new LGA 1366 socket.
Intel declined the opportunity to respond to this report.

Okay found this on VR-Zone.
If you not care about SuperPI then here is 3DMark Vantage CPU score for 2.66GHz Bloomfield...
CPU score 16294
2.66GHz Bloomfield at 1.075v
http://www.techpowerup.com/img/08-07-09/3.jpg
vs
CPU score 18227
4.5GHz Q9650 at 1.552v
http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/1774/4870x3cge5.jpg
I found that a 2.66GHz stock clocked Bloomfield is as fast as 4.2GHz overclocked Q9650 with CPU score 16384 found on Futuremark database.
http://service.futuremark.com/resultComparison.action?compareResultId=187620&compareResultType=19
I think Bloomfield is full of surprises, it definitely worth the wait.
Digital MasteR, think you can OC your Q9450 to 4.2GHz on air 24/7? :)
Any OC reports? I'm wondering what negative impact the IMC is going to have on overclocking. Also wondering if the multiplyers are gonna be locked again on non-extreme chips.

Locked multipliers shouldn't be a problem this time because the default multipliers are quite high, 20x for example. If the Extreme Edition doesn't have any other advantage over the normal Bloomfield chips, I'll get a normal verison.
20x200MHz would be nice and 133MHz -> 200MHz doesn't sound like big deal to me ;)
But the IMC could be a problem for overclocking. I also heard there might be a locked bus.

There is a thread about it at XtremeSystems Forum (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=197707) and most posters believe this is not true, some with very good explanations.
I hope at least the date is right.
