I keep getting this error in various game downloads that use the windows installer. I updated it to 3.1 and still get the error often. Sometimes it doesn't, but 95% of the time it pops up. I reformatted and thought it went away but it gave me the same error when installing the Devil May Cry 4 demo.

Any suggestions?

Go to the Installshield site and get the latest one. Install it and see if it helps. I remember having this issue back on my XP machine. That was one of the solutions from tech support I got.

Hmmm I updated to Windows Installer 3.1 and it didn't help. Would updating to SP3 make a difference?

maybe you should try buying games, and not downloading them

Um I'm not trying to download a full game..

I am trying to download the demo for devil may cry 4. Windows installer gives me that error.

I can mean a few things if the Installshield thing didn't work.

1.) Your hardware is dying on you - HDD or memory.

2.) The demo you downloaded is corrupt. Re-download it again.

Have you tried updating your DirectX and all that? If it's happening to most of your downloaded demos, then I'm pretty sure it can be hardware related. Run some RAM tests and stuff.

Hard drives are both running fine...I'll see about the memory

This is somewhat surprising. Errors keep popping up on memtest. Surprising because I've been running games fine, but this could be why my pc won't boot right i suppose.

Did you ever increase your memory voltage like we talked about in the other thread?

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=116148

Insufficient voltage for your RAM will cause corruption and instability.

Yeah I did, it wouldn't boot the next morning after raising the voltage...However it did restart twice like you said and work fine immediately after changing it.
If I run memtest twice at the same time, 739mb each, it only happens on the first one. That being said, I'm guessing the first stick is the one with errors.
I might try upping the voltage again and see if it gives me errors.

Ughh

No errors now that the voltage is at 2.1.

Not sure if it will support it in the morning though or not like last time.

I still wonder what is causing the data1.cab thing though. I had this before AND after a reformat

EDIT: Nvm, i lied. There's the errors.

So this could be causing the data1.cab problem?

Could be. A lot of people underestimate the problems bad ram can cause. It's so spontaneous when it happens that it's the "it ran fine 10 minutes ago" scenario most of the time.

If you've had this problem before and after a reformat, then it could be the culprit. Try using different ram or take the bad stick out and try again. If it's the ram, then you know at least what's causing it.

Yeah you probably have bad ram if giving it the proper voltage isn't fixing it.
