Looking for 300-750GB HDD. I want something fast and reasonably priced. I have a 150GB Raptor that I will use for my OS, then I want this new drive for storage and some steam games.

WD6400AAKS - one of the fastest, and with a very reasonable price.

The new Velociraptor drives from WD come in a 300GB flavor, and ATM, only cost $1 per GB (Read: ~$300 USD for each HDD).

Doesn't get any faster then that!

I'm happy with my Samsung F1 drive. I'm a fan of Barracuda drives, too. The 7200.11 looks good.

Have to ditto the WD6400. It is getting amazing reviews. I am currently running the WD 750 GB, which replaced a Raptor. The Raptor was quick, but platter density on the latest crop of 7200rpm drives have made the Raptor a noisy mess. Get two 640s and ditch the Raptor. The choice of RAID0, RAID1 or OS/Storage is yours.

I recently found a 750GB WD external with the same drive as my internal on sale at Best Buy for back-up purposes, BTW. Pretty proud of myself, $130 after tax with a Reward Zone coupon I had sitting around.

The Velociraptor is the best drive out, but it is stupid pricey. You can get three 640s for the one VR.

The 640s are only 100 bucks each?

And my Raptor drives are far from noisy.

Using 2 WD6400 drives and they are very fast and quiet. I would highly recommend them. Very reasonable price too.

And you are in denial. Raptors are loud. Velociraptors aren't, Raptors are. I may sell my Raptor 150 if anyone is interested, heh.

Get Adaptec HW RAID card + 4x WD6400AAKS, put them into RAID.5, and you will have something like 200 MB/s average read, for still reasonable price, 1.92TB capacity.

Not at all. They are "noisy" only if you are talking in relative terms compared to other HDDs. In reality (e.g. real world application) my 10K RPM Raptor HDDs arent loud enough for me to hear over my fans and or the sound coming from my PC speakers while I game, listen to music, watch videos, etc. Point being, the Raptor HDDs aren't anywhere near obtrusively loud.

BTW; anyone interested in a 3.5" HDD should look at this:

I'll disagree. The Raptor is not noisy in relation to other components. You do hear it thrashing at start up. You do hear it over case fans. You do hear it in between levels when gaming. I was in the no-that-loud crowd for years. I was wrong. Heh.

That chart is very outdated. My preferred source for storage reviews is Tech Report. Their latest update to their Velociraptor review has many of the drives discussed in this thread.

WE are NOT your slaves! Find your own drive!

I recommend any of the Sammysung Spinpoints.

The only knock against the Samsungs is reliability. From reviews on Newegg, a high number complained of out of box failures. I know that everyone that gets a dead drive will bitch, but there was a lot of complaints. I would imagine they have the QC under control now that the drives have been under production for a while.

Western Digital and Samsung are ahead by quite a bit right now. Seagate had their run but they seem to have slipped a little.

According to my (whole)seller, Samsung drives are still slightly less reliable than WD and Hitachi drives. They sell them a lot though, because they are cheaper.

I wouldn't use junkers for storage... Any important storage has a backup, so does it really matter?

Hell yes! Even if I back up my stuff I still don't want there to be a higher then average chance that my HDD will crap out on me.

Besides most everyone tends to NOT back up often enough.

Same reason i snapped. The Raptor is not bad at idle. I got tired of the cement mixer in my all aluminum case. Heh.

Just two platters so it should be better than the 750.

LOL you people are WAY too sensitive to that HDD noise. I seriously have NO issues with the Raptors sound.
