Funny thing is the ram wasn't hot. I would have thought it got pretty hot as well, but from those FLIR images the gpu was what was producing the heat.

Very compact chip doing a lot of work. Very good heat distribution for the factory cooler.

That was not actually a thermal test. It was explaining why some 3rd party coolers caused the death of several 4870s. Basically it has some tests with the 3rd party cooler (accelero I think) vs the ATI cooler. The chip itself would run cooler but certain other components on the card would overheat because they're no longer cooled properly...

I did see a thread where with out the fan port on the card in use, that the 4870 would go into thermal shut down over 75C, IIRC. I'll try to find it, but the 4870 is certainly designed to run hot. In fact seems to target 78-80C as the idle temp, with very slight fluctuations in the GPU fan speed to keep it there.
New hardware is fun.
