Why do Steam games take so long to load and play, vims?

I downloaded Titan's Quest last night, which took hours. It was 100% done when I got up. Then, I go to play it this morning, and Steam tells me the game will be ready to play in 4 hours, and goes on downloading(?) content.

What the hell is it doing, why does it take so long to get games "ready to play?"

Thanks shaws.

It's telling you to just run to the store and get a boxed copy because if you did you could have played it yesterday.

I don't know for games that are already out for a long time, but I know that when you preorder and preload a forthcoming game on steam, it "encrypts" the game data and then "decrypts" it when the game is officialy launched (and it may take a long time to decrypt).

Steam is pretty fast for me. Downloading now (Silverfall package 21GB) at 2.0-2.4MBytes/Second.

I downloaded CS:S and HL2 at the same time, got around 300 kb/s on both. It wasn't too bad.

The last TF2 up date I got said it was moving at 700k/s but it took forever. I thought I was downloading the whole thing over again. :headexplode:

I've had a similar problem with X2 and X3 for the last 2 years.

They will get to 100%, then continue to update for a day or week even.

Piece of ****.

Exactly... I don't mind the download taking a while... I get that. But how come the updates take so fricking long? No more steam game DL's for methimpikehoses.

EDIT: mother of God, it's finally ready to play. :|

Here's a tip, sometimes I see steam just stall when updating. It says it's updating but no data is actually being sent, to fix it right click on the title name select pause update, then do it again and select resume update and it will start updating again at full speed.
