Just use onboard, if you are using basic, then it sounds like onboard will do you just fine.

Well he has a point (maybe 2 points). Why exactly are you using Vista Basic? Some onboard Realtek solutions are in fact considered very good so it might not be worth upgrading to a $70 seperate sound card.

Jeez, ok. Look I just assumed as you were using Basic you'd want nothing fancy. If I assumed wrong I apologise. Now For under $70, you're only option is an older model X-FI, which is nothing to sneeze at and will net you DS3D support on Vista with Alchemy. Other than that there isn't much in the $70 bracket which is better than onboard AND supports 64bit, which brings me back to my original recommendation. Onboard has come a long way, that 750i motherboard would have pretty good onboard and easily comparable to standalone $70 solutions.
Over $70 on the other hnd, you have More X-FIs, Preludes, Xonars all of which kick ass, but cost a pretty penny.
Next time, try not to have a fit when you do not hear what you want to hear.

You've got a point, but I do agree with Crainger. Sort-of, anyway, and for different reasons. But allow me to continue.
With Vista, Microsoft decided to make dedicated audio accelerators redundant, and shift all audio processing to software. This puts a small extra load on the CPU, but means that PCs can be cheaper, as the $70 soundcard really does become unnecessary.
The only difference between an add-in soundcard and the onboard audio is that the add-in soundcard is likely to have better Digital to Analogue Converters, or DACs for short. This means that you can expect some slightly better sound quality, but only if you're hooking up using the analogue outputs, and only then if you're hooking up to some decent gear. If you're outputting via digital, there's no difference at all between an $1000 audio interface, and the free onboard that your system comes with.
Me, given the quality of Creative's Vista drivers, I'd stick with onboard. Or I would do if I didn't produce music and run a $1000 audio interface, anyway.

i was going to say why not use your onboard sound as well. the majority of sound cards out there are X-Fi's. and from what i hear, many people are not satsified with X-Fi's in Vista (drivers mainly). so, i would use the onboard sound (like i do on my P35) and save the cash.
on another note, dont be an asshole to people here. they dont get paid to help you. so if youre going to act like an asshole, dont be surprised when we treat you like one.

i miss typed its a 650i mobo and the on board sound is starting to hicup , it will probably fail soon , i would rather invest in a 70 dollar card than a new motherboard , i have no problem with using onboard sound unfortunately its days are numbered . i wont be getting a new board for another year or so, if i get a card i have the option to use it in the future . ive had creative products in the past and wont be going that route , eax and driver support was **** ,i will never go down that road again
i have basic because it serves my needs , i dont care about aero or all the other bloat/crap that is bundled with premium/ulitimate , my os is a os only , ilike to run only the processes i need so performance doesnt suffer , basic is rock solid, dependable and has a reasonably small footprint

given the lack of information that you provided, crainger's answer seemed like a totally reasonable response. please do not taunt ppl here. it will not be tolerated.
also, fwiw, you can enable aero with a registry tweak. also,if your sound is failing, you may want to consider an RMA.

Your balls!
In case you haven't seen it, in an episode of South Park, Ms Chokesondick asks Mr Garrison how to get the kids to behave. He said if they say 'suck my balls' like you did. She should reply 'Present them.' As I did.
You were chicken **** and failed to present them. ::(:
