I guess there was no way of knowing this would happen early on since we didn't have any 4870 or 4850 performance numbers before the GTX series was released.

Still, I can't imagine spending $650 on a 280 with the 4870 right around the corner, and I definitely wouldn't have spent the money after seeing how competitive it was.

Don't perform the ole sneaky switcheroo on me. We are talking about the GTX 260 price; now vs. original. Yeah I agree, the GTX 280 was way overpriced originally which is one reason why I bought the GTX 260 instead.

Given the reported noise, and poor AoC performance of the 4870, I think the original prices for the 4870 vs. the GTX 260 were about right. Even at $100 more, I would personally opt for the 260. I prefer my hair dryer and its associated noise in my bathroom only.

The card's quiet as a mouse, so I don't know where you get this "noise" from. In fact, a major complaint about it has been that ATI kept the fan speed too low in order to keep it quiet and thus it runs at rather high temps.

Every review I've seen says the card's loud..... like many of the bugged 280's. Can you point me to just one professional review that describes the 4870 as quiet?

The 4870 is very quiet, much quieter than my old 8800GT. If you override stock fan settings, it can get loud, but no reviews have done this that I've seen.

Can you point me to one that says it's not? I haven't read any reviews that talked about the card being "loud"--only that it runs hot due to a really low spinning fan.

Take it from those who actually own it--the card is very quiet with the stock fan speed only running at 23%. It's just as quiet as any Nvidia card that I've ever owned. Personally, I think ATI made it TOO quiet as the fan needs to be spinning faster to keep temps down.

My 4870 was very quiet and in turn 60C+ at idle with load temps in the 90C+ range! This is a well ventilated case and reasonable ambient air. When you use the profile fan "fix" to cool it off, anything over 35% and it's annoying, the higher it goes, the more annoying it gets :(
My 260 on the other hand idles at 40C or so in the same case and room temps) and is barely noticeable with the fan at "Auto" (40%) Under the same full load it goes to 70C or so and the fan still isn't noticeable Oh BTW that's OC (so far) to 650
All in all the NV cards run cooler and quieter based on my personal experience ;)

Cards don't lose half their price in 6 weeks every time. This is the only (outright silly) claim I disputed. I'm accusing you of making this claim because you wanted us to "learn out lesson" from it as if to imply this always happens.

I paid retail for my GTX 260 - $399 (and yes, I'm getting money back from eVGA). Even today, they're not $200 so we're still waiting for "half price"! Want my suggestion? Don't hold your breath for this being anytime soon (sans the dreaded rebate).

If I had also contacted Newegg during the initial massive price drop, I would have made money on this ordeal ($399 - up to $100 from Newegg - $60 from eVGA). So maybe the lesson should be to buy with the price is unfairly high!?!

Do you even know whyt hey dropped? Cards never drop like this. just look at how long the 8800GTX stayed beyond the $400 range. That is because there was no competition. ATI has finally come up with cards that can compete with Nvidia, thus the price drops. Call my fanboi but I will always take Nvidia over ATI. No I did not buy my GTX 260 at retail but I did buy my 9800GTX before the price drop and stepped up to the 260. Gotta love EVGA! (nana2)
