Hi nvToni,

You are going through the EXACT same pain as I was when I first got my 4870 (coming from a 8800GTX, then a 9800GX2 to the 4870).

As others have said, ATI drivers don't override things the same way nVidia does. I like the way nVidia does it much better, but that's just my preference.

The ONLY way I have gotten vSync to override is to run the D3DOverrider.exe application that comes in a directory when you install RivaTuner 2.09.

Performance-wise, I'll have to double check what I am seeing in WIC when I get home tonight. I don't have quad core, but have a pretty good CPU with 2GB Ram. I don't know about ATI drivers under Vista 64, but maybe they don't perform as well as Vista 32? Does anyone know?

Oh, and if I had to do it over again, I'd buy the GTX 260 or spend some extra cash and get the GTX 280 (However the overheating problems scared me off from going that route).

My plan now is to hang on to this card until nVidia has a die shrink on the GTX 280 (I'm hoping for this fall).

Hi nvToni,
Performance-wise, I'll have to double check what I am seeing in WIC when I get home tonight.

I get 16 min, 34 avg, 57 max on my rig at 1920x1200, Very High settings with Cat 8.7 beta drivers. Time to try 8.8 beta!

ATI's drivers in V64 are just fine. I have it, and everything flies.

Some just seem to have problems transitioning from Nvidia's way of doing things to ATI's way of doing things.

Under 8.8 beta I went up to 20 min, 35 avg, 61 max. Not a bad increase!

OK so you are getting pretty much the same results as me - but I'm a t 1280x1024, so mine should be higgher.

Can you try to bench at this resulution or something closer to it and post results.

Ok so I just did the 3D mark Vantage test and didn't change anything in settings - left it on performance and scored 6825.

Is this good or is this bad?

EDIT: I found some test with a slower CPU and only 2Gb ram and on the performance setting they scored 8412 points.

wtf

My score is 7,248
CPU = 6082
GPU = 7743

This is on a C2D E8400 (3.0Ghz) stock
4GB PC2-6400 RAM
HD 4870 stock
Vista 32 SP1

I do not have WiC so I cannot comment.

As for forcing AA and AF in Vista I seem to be able to in Bioshock and Mass Effect. Other games that have the setting in game I just go with that. Never gave it much thought. As others have stated, you can "enhance" a games AA mode I think by simply enabling that enhancement in the CCC like enabling adaptive AA? Which I have not experiemented with myself much.

I did notice I get hitching in Grid if I force AA in the CCC but no hitching if I use it's in game AA setting. I can use TENT wide or narrow in the AA screen of CCC if I want to adjust how the game AA's but it looks fine as is and I have not bothered.
