I've heard a couple people report that SP3 improved their overall computer speed, but I'm wondering what SP3 contains which would lead to this perception? Has anybody else experienced this?

Q: What are these new features I keep hearing about?
A: Windows XP Service Pack 3 will not include any major new features, but it will include four minor new features that improve the system's reliability and security. Contrary to reports, Microsoft has been very up-front about these functional additions for quite some time now.

These new features include:

Network Access Protection compatibility. Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.

Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.

Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft.

"Black hole" router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.

And that's about it. Nothing dramatic, as promised.

No performance gains that I could detect.

I've noticed on slower system, they run better after SP3, but on rigs like ours, you wont see much difference.

My rig runs better on Vista 32 than XP sp3, both of them with some slight tuning.

I haven't noticed any specific performance improvements with SP3 on my work laptop. Or any noticeably better stability.

Because there are still problems with Vista, some of them ARE show stoppers.

For example, I have a rig with 8 GB of ram and a Q6600 in it. I need to run multiple virtual machines at once for testing purposes. They all run like a dream on XP 64, but experience many "hiccups" and slowdowns on Vista 64. Also, I can run a virtual machine and still stream music over my network with XP 64. The music typically skips if I do any activity that heavily accesses ANY local disk on Vista 64.

Vista has a lot going for it, but it also has its share of problems... even if YOU aren't experiencing them.

Yeah, if you've got a killer rig, you won't feel much of a difference.

I noticed about faster booting times with my config. The rest, the same. No compatibility problems.

I've only noticed one issue of compatibility. Some DLink wireless USB dongles require updated drivers. That's about it so far. ::D:
