http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/08/08/lower-review-scores-for-gears-pc-is-bull****-says-capps/

“I think it’s bull****,” he told MundoRare. “Because what we did was take a great game, Gears of War 1 for Xbox 360, made it run at higher resolutions and added three new hours of really good gameplay and it got lower reviews. I think that’s bull****, and I don’t understand it. I can’t figure out what it is.

“Like, ‘It’s an old game.’ Well, yeah, but it’s new on that platform, so I was really surprised to see lower reviews for what I think a much better game. It had new multiplayer modes, new levels, three hours of gameplay you never saw on 360 that the 360 guys are still upset we haven’t given them, right? So to get lower reviews for more game that’s good? It just doesn’t make any sense.”

Epic cries a lot.

To put it simply... the quality of a PC game is higher than the one of a console. The PC platform is with us for all those years and we've seen amazing AAA titles. GoW for the PC had to top them all to get higher scores, whereas in X360 it didn't have any real competition. Finally, the PC reviewers are generally more demanding and don't give easily high scores (for instance, check the multiplatform games which are way better on the PC. You'll see that their scores are lower than the ones of the consoles versions or check the console games that didn't impress the PC gamers at all with their graphics but still got a 9/10 in the graphics area).

Exactly. Why is Halo royalty on the Xbox, but average on the PC? it's because of changes in standards when coming to PC. It's not BS, it's just, in general, impressing PC gamers is tougher than console gamers.

Plus, hype should never be under estimated for review scores and impressions, and it's hard to hype a console port released a while afterwards. He's overlooking the fact most reviews of GoW on the 360 were done around or even before release time and are probably inflated due to the hype around the title.

Agree with JohnDio, however Gears of War PC has been one of the best games I enjoyed last year, for me it deserves 9/10, even more if you play in coop with a friend. Sure it needed a couple of patches, but once they arrived the game works great, at least for me.

BTW I have checked Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/gearsofwar) and the game averages 87%, with half of the reviews giving at least a 9/10, so I'm not sure why he's complaining about the reviews

Is this game finally stable? How is the performance? I enjoyed it on the 360 but I always hoped a proper PC version would be relased, some very nice visuals that a proper PC could make even nicer.

GoW was not special...i don't know what he is ****ting about...

It might also help if you release it across all platforms at the same time...without the live royalty bull****.

GoW isn't exactly the cream of the PC gaming crop.

I think it would have gotten a lot more respect if we didn't get it as sloppy seconds. It was M$'s cash cow though and were I in the position to make as much money as possible, I'd have done what they did.

Epic President Mike Capps was a little frustrated at the lack of love the PC version of Gears of Wars got:

“I think it’s bull****,” he told MundoRare. “Because what we did was take a great game, Gears of War 1 for Xbox 360, made it run at higher resolutions and added three new hours of really good gameplay and it got lower reviews. I think that’s bull****, and I don’t understand it. I can’t figure out what it is.

Here was the problem(s):

1) It used Windows Live for multiplayer -- However you want to spin it, unless you were a paying member, GFWL made for an ass-sucking experience trying to set up matches and finding games. Windows Live is now free, so assuming all of the "Gold" crap is now unlocked for everyone to use, might be decent now.

2) Bugs & Crashes - I don't know how well they eventually patched Gears of War on the PC, but at the time of its release, you were lucky to even be able to load the game much less play the new chapters.

If the matchmaking stuff has been unlocked and the game is all patched up, GoW PC might be worth another look. It's pretty cheap now as well -- check your local bargin bin -- so that's a plus too.

I still get the same stuttering problem(s) even after several driver updates, OS updates, a clean system format, a hardware re-seating session and a video card upgrade.

I've learned to live with it, though I don't think it will ever be resolved.

I was special on the 360. When people rave about it, it's usually because they have played the co-op with a friend, side by side on the same couch. It's a blast, you can come up with some great tactics and try to out do each other wish over the top kills. As you said though, when it came to PC, almost everyone had done it before, seen it before, so they just were not excited.

I think if you delay games releases across platforms you are generally going to get a poorer score, it's how the industry works. Just like expansion packs get a generally lower score, for about the same money's worth. Why, because it's not new.

I also tend to agree that standards are higher, console gamers can swear blue murder if you like but PC gamers have soooo many games to compare, consoles usually only have that generation, as if there is a blockage when it's not on the same system.

Orange box being the exception last year, which deserved to score higher on PC

COD 4, PS3 - 94.16% 360 - 93.68% PC - 92.7%

UT3, PS3 - 86.07% PC - 83.53%

You can find exceptions, but I'd be prepared to back Action/Shooter titles scoring higher on consoles. RTS games score higher on PC due to controls more often than not. Bioshock was close - PC down still. Mass Effect close - PC down still.

Maybe it could be a reflection of the game reviewers, PC game reviewers more jaded, been there done that attitudes? Or maybe it's the money under the tables by the big corps to console reviewers. I thought gears for PC played well, added some new stuff, had good mp. I think 94% to 87% is rather unfair.

Speaking of Mass Effect... it really is an amazing game and it runs so smooth :D. This is definitely among the best ports i've ever seen. Cudos to Bioware :)

Wonder what score will have GTA IV. 10/10 this game really does not deservse it on consoles either.

Console games are accustomed to mediocre titles that they claim as being godlike. Hell, just look at Halo.

That's all.

Or maybe they could release the game at the same time, so a review site can talk about the game etc, then move next to the difference between the platforms...gow was released much later on the pc version and its hard to review something like that when you already reviews it before/played it/etc..

GoW maybe a great game on console but is only a good game on PC. I was chainsawing baddies 15 years ago.

Is Epic really that naive in how the different markets view games? Epic has lost total touch of what the PC market wants and requires.

Looking forward to Epic's b*tching and moaning about UT3 scores 3 months from now.

Maybe it's just my TN panel, but GoW and all other UT3 games look like living crap to my eyes. I truly hate the color pallet. Everything looks gray/blue.

I bought GoW pc and never played it past the first half hour. I just think it's the worst gameplay I've played since FEAR, which I also thought sucked incredibly bad. I hate wave shooters.

Everyone needs to remember Bioware did NOT do the port. Demiurge Studios did the port.

Saying PC gamers like 'higher quality games than consoles' is quite laughable. In a FPS or TPS like GoW I would agree, as the PC does them better. But higher quality games in general? Giggle. It's quite the opposite. Or are we judging on GFX alone again? :rolleyes2

Judging console games on Halo alone is just a typical PC gamer comment. We all know Halo is over rated, but so have many PC games been.

I agree, if I'd only settled for high quality games, I'd have never played Vampire: Bloodlines which is one of the greatest buggiest games ever and is still one of the most popular RPGs out there, it has 2 constantly upto date community patches, this is something special considering the actual developer closed down before the first and only official patch came out. THAT really shows how the PC audience differs from the consoles, and it's almost impossible to know which games we will embrace, and which we will not.

Go out fanboys.

@Craniger LOOL Vampire Blood Lines this game was released in PS2 times : ) Look at Dark Messiah Elements than say me again that console games have good quality. Not to mentio that I hate how poor are console games published.
