NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!:fu::banghead:(pb)(pb)(bur)
I had received my brand new ASUS HD 4870 and after a few days of messing around with the fan/heatsink, I thought I would try my Thermaltake Duo-Orb on iti a give it a go.
I know some guy on Rage3D said it wasn't up for the job, but I thought I would see for myself. And of course it wasn't (idle was good, but load went into the the 90's quite quickly). Anyway... I'm taking off the Duo-Orb and specificaly the heat sinks that I had attached to the memory (I used copper HS, not the one Thermaltakes supplies)...
AND I PULLED OFF ONE THE THE MEMORY CHIPS!!!!! WITH LITTLE WIRES DANGLING AND ALL!!!!!!
HOLY Shiz!! I panicked. Could I even RMA it? It would take up 2 weeks turnaround to get a new one. And I had to RMA my Gigabyte 8800GT (couldn't output a DVI signal, just analog only). Anyhoo... Out of desperation I drove to my local BestBuy, picked up a Visiontek HD 4870, swaped out the coolers, switched a sticker or two and took the busted card back to BestBuy stating that it was defective, told them it was causing fatal errors. Oh BTW... these first patch of HD 4870's are ALL coming out of the exact same factory. I also flashed the bios of the Visiontek card to an ASUS version.
I know I'm going to burn in HELL:firedevil but I was desperate.
So lesson learned.... BE VERY CAREFUL when removing heatsinks.
You are a VERY naughty boy! :spank:
Hmm you should consider yourself lucky although what you did is a kind of cheating .. not something one should be proud of. you should 've held the responsibility of what you did but anyway ...

Wow, that was pretty nasty of you. :p
Still, that's really crappy. How the hell did you pull a ram chip clean off? You weren't using a thermal adhesive were you? That stuff is intended to be permanent and will break something 90% of the time if you try to remove it with force.

Just thermal tape. All 8 heatsinks came off easily, EVEN the one that broke free. NO extra pressure on my part was needed. Makes me wonder if it wasn't properly attached.

Your right, I can't arrgue with that one bit. But a $280 'life leason' was something that would of been hard to bit the bullet on. I deffinately have some bad ju'ju' heading my way.

Meh, this is my feeling as well. :p
Mistakes happen, and since he was only using thermal tape it sounds like a poorly attached ram chip rather than him doing something improperly.
I probably would have tried to do something through company I bought the card from though. You no longer have a warranty and there's no way you're getting it back because the card that had the warranty is now somewhere at BestBuy.

Actually the ASUS warranty is still good. The stickers very easily transfered, and I flashed the card with an ASUS bios. And as I have previosly mentioned, these cards are identical to each other. I see no way for a RMA clerk to be able to tell the difference.

Hmm...
Well, I hope you never have to RMA it anyways.

I have only ever had to RMA one card and that was the Gigabyte 8800GT that I just replaced. And I think part of that was because it was one of Gigabytes own designs.
I'm not too worried. If I ever have to RMA this card, I don't see a problem. But IF it is.... well.... :D'live by the sword, die by the sword' (in a computer... tech... sort of way).

That's not a bad idea.
Just an FYI... I worked retail (Target) while I was doing my time in college. BestBuy will just return the item to the vendor. It's Visiontek that will take the hit. I guess I going to own Visiontek my next card purchase or two.

You may not be out of the woods. You signed a return receipt verifying it was the product you bought, right? They know who you are. They know where you live.
Who is that behind you?

Um, no, the lesson we learned is that you're a douche who doesn't take responsibility for his own mistakes.
