View Full Version : GForce 2 MX - Slackware 9 [ X freeze ]
hi all,
I've encounter a problem with the latest Nvidia driver. Somebody plz help me! =).
ok here the situation, I'm using GForce 2 MX ~200, AMD Duron ~1.2 G Mhz, with MSI KT133 mainboard and Slackware 9.0 as operating system. The driver installation was very clean (nice installer tho ;). All things (X setting, driver module, GL extension) so far working very good. But after a while, my X is freezing. I notice that, a while after I start surfing (with mozilla), then my X window is freezing. All keyboard and mouse was not functionig. So, I started to check on X log file ( at /var/adm/ ), but there is no fatal/error.
Does anyone experince the same thing? Or, got solution or pointer for me?
thx in advance

Had the same problem... My X didn't hang anymore when i first turned off the AGP support in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
As a better approach to the problem, recompile your kernel and turn off the AGP Gart option, then, set to NvGart the agp option in your XF86Config.... This will leave you to use the AGP with your videocard, but, at least in my box the, it seems that there's no AGP bandwith to handle...
The last driver works pretty ugly, and is so much unstable, I'll go back to an older version.... you can download one from ftp://download.nvidia.com
thx for ur reply darkasm,
FYI, last time I've disable the AGPart by setting up "NvAGP" in /etc/XF86Config to use NvAGP driver instead of using AGPart. Still, the problem exists. But, the kernel was not completely recompile with AGPart module disabled. I go through XFree86 log in /var/adm, the AGPart was not used, instead, NvAGP driver was succesfully loaded.
I've also tried several time recompile my kernel (AGPart module still enabled) to experiment with APIC/Local APIC and SMP options. Still, not a solution for me. May be should try disable AGP support as your suggestion. I'ill post the result then.
thx again.

Hi I actually have exactly the same problem
with Slackware 9.0
It freezes a few time after X starts
I don't know why and there isn't anything in the logs
I recompiled a 2.4.21 without DRI support but
without success ( Someone told me to try that )
so I will try the older drivers
and II'l post the result

I made some test and I just found that's not a
nvidia new drivers problem but a slackware problem
I reinstalled slackware 9.0 and I juste kept my old XF86config ( with the 2D nv drivers ) file from my other linux and Slack stops to respond too with no messages or anything in the logs.
So I think there's something else...

that's really a slackware related problem coz I
used the drivers On FreeBSD and Red Hat linux without any problem
actually I'm playing Ennemy territory under Red Hat linux without any problem
II'l send a mail to the slack developper, maybe they know the problem and a solution :)
