View Full Version : Nextgen PC
So will October be the month to build that uber pc with Nehalem (Core i7) on a X58 motherboard with 6 gigs of DDR3 memory (3 slots) with Nvidia SLI bridge chip, and a pair of Nvidia G200BX2 cards in SLI running physx enhanced games and CUDA supported applications :) Bring it.
Yes. the future of next-gen PC's looks bright
its just so much hassle to build a new PC allover again :p

I ain't changing nothing. I'm upgrading to the best LGA775 CPU (not Xtreme) when that time comes, and sticking with that. I just upgraded, spending upwards of 1500 on video cards, motherboard, PSU, etc. After all, the CPU doesn't need to be that fast... The large majority of games are GPU limited.

If i had the same option like you I would do the same but for me the best option is wait for the Nehalem.

Well, it was sort of a forced upgrade. I wouldn't have, if things had gone as planned. I got one GTX280 that had the temperature issue. I RMAed not expecting it to be accepted (opened it and replaced the TIM) and got a second 280. When the first came back, I decided to try SLI, so I went and got a new motherboard and a new PSU. Normally I would have purchased only a GTX280 and stuck with that... If Intel ends up offering SLI on the X58, I might give it a go. Though that means a new motherboard, new CPU and new memory. Again, too much money...

Intel will offer the SLI on the X58 boards but the boards probably wont be ready with the first Nehalems and will cost more.
Anyway with your setup I'm sure you don't need to be in any hurry.

edit 6x8gig of DDR3

6x8? i thought they already stated that they would have only 4 dimms via 3 channels? 1 dimm for channel 1 and 2, and channel 3 would have 2 dimms. That way you could have 2x2x1x1 and still have the 6gbs equally across the 3 channels
My Quad will be here soon enough. I'm not upgrading for another year or so.

My name's Revs, and I approve of this fix :)

I'll wait for the cheaper and faster 32nm refresh around the time Sandy Bridge will be the "next best thing" to come out in 6+ months.

I think you will need too wait much longer.
Westmere (nothing to do with Sandy Bridge) is the 32nm shrink of Nehalem architecture and it's going to be available Q4 2009.
Sandy Bridge is new Micro-architecture and we wont see any before second half of 2010.
It's all about Intel Tick Tock CPU advancements.

Then come the stacked sandwiches, yum.

x58 will be 3 banks with 6 slots.
the lower mainstream boards and chipsets may do the 4 slots.
i prefer 6 slots.
= more memory.
