My laptop needed a reformat so I inserted the disc and began the reformat like always. After the drive was formatted and then rebooted windows prompted me with a message "disk read error" ctrl+alt+delete to restart. I also tried this with 2 other OS discs i had for other computers. I checked making sure it was booting from hdd rather than the cd and still same error occurred. What would cause this error? Thanks in advance for your help.

Check your disk with some disk tool to see if it is working OK, you can use this bootable CD http://www.biosmedic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16 it has disk utilities for well known brands.

Did you delete partition + create new one and then slow format ? that should have worked.

yes i deleted old partition and created new one and did a "quick" format. The reason i did this one is because i tried the slow method and it stayed at 0% for an hour with no activity whereas the quick method only took about 15 minutes to complete the entire format. Do u have any other suggestions?
try the slow format again. let it go overnight. let us know how it went.

A quick format should not take 15 minutes, I think it's a very safe bet that the drive is failing and should just be replaced with a new one.

QFT. A quick format should take like 30 seconds, you can do a full format in 15 minutes.
