Its true. Sorry. The 1992 Dream Team wasn't even the best players of THEIR time. Just popular old farts. I'm tired of everyone thinking this was the best basketball team ever put together. Most of the players were WAY past their prime. Jordan is really the only significant force from the beloved 1992 "Dream Team".
If it were the 1992 "Dream Team" vs. the 2008 USA Team, the 2008 USA Team would win by a significant margin. Sorry Jordan lovers. He just wouldn't have enough help.
The 2008 USA Basketball team is the best basketball team in history. No team in history could have competed against them.

The 2008 USA Basketball team has yet to win gold. Until then, wait and see.

Maybe you've forgotten who was on the team back then. Besides Christian Laettner, they are all hall-of-famers, and no, they were not WAY passed their prime.
I think the 2008 team would give them a run, and maybe beat them, but to say that 2008 is better hands-down is idiotic. You can do better than this, Tygerwood.

That 92 team has 10 times the basketball smarts as the current team does. Athletic ability may have gone up over the years but playing smart basketball has gone down.
BTW Is it just me or is Chris Mullen about to go super nova? Damn! need some shades to look at him.
The Dream Team has two of the best centers to ever play the game. They would control the middle.

I know very well who was on the team. Magic was way past his prime. Larry Bird was way past his prime. Drexler was way past his prime. Ewing was a joke. Christian Laettner was a joke. Stockton was ok. Malone was ok. Pippen was ok. Barkley and Jordan were great. Robinson was great.
With the exception of the last 3 players I listed, the 2008 USA squad was EASILY better than everyone on the team. The 1992 USA team had more size to their team, so obviously they would have an advantage there. Then there is Jordan. Other than those two things, the 2008 USA team has a clear advantage.

I disagree with your comment about basketball smarts. I dont think there is a clear advantage there at all.
However, I do agree that the Dream team would have an advantage down low.

Not at all. The over all understanding of the game is an advantage to the dream team. Stockton and Magic would have controlled the tempo and the game would be low scoring with the ball being dumped into the middle. Even at their age they would have had the advantage.
BTW Clyde was not past his prime. He was averaging 26 ppg that year. Byrd was better than all on the current team even when he was laying on the court with back spasm. :D
However, I do agree that the Dream team would have an advantage down low.
And that is where the game would be won. Don't get me wrong I am no knocking the current team. They are fantastic and I love watching them play. I just think you do not give the best players in the game at that time the respect they are due. Not to mention 3 of the top 5 in the history of the game are on that squad, Byrd, Magic and Jordan. No point guard has ever even come close to being as good as Irving was.

I agree with this. However, Magic and Byrd were past their prime so they are irrelevant. I'd rather have a present day Lebron James and Chris Paul.

The more I gaze at that pic of the dreamteam, the more I can't believe that you say they would lose. You have Stockton and Malone coming off the bench to backup Magic Johnson. You have Clyde Drexler, who took Portland to the finals that year, coming off the bench to spell Jordan. Then you have Patrick Ewing and D Robinson dominating Dwight Howard down low. LOL, it just doesn't add up.
Sure, Bird was a bit old, but the guy could still fill up the bucket. He wasn't in there for D. They had the Mailman and Pippen for that.
Granted, if the two teams played tomorrow, the 2008 team would win.
Chris Mullin's skin is the purest, brightest shade of white that has ever existed.

AHAHA I got you to spell Bird's name wrong AHAHAH I win. :D
They were past their prime but still they were not irrelevant. If you want to bring up a hypothetical match between these two them put them all in their prime and it would be a 20 point win for the Dream team. Why not do this? After all this is completely made up. ;)
You can have lebron and Paul. I will take the ones who have won championships and know how to win them.
Oh and there isn't anyone on the current team that could stop Barkley or Malone. It just wouldn't happen. You got the power forward shored up for the Dream team and the middle. That is game set match. Now we haven't even gotten to the shooting guards who were not past their prime. Sorry Tyger but the only thing you have is Bird and Magic being old. Honestly, you can leave them out of the game and it is wont by the Dream team.
Oh and this is the other reason why the current team wouldn't win.

Yeah if they played each other tomorrow I would have to give the nod to The Redeem team. :D

If Magic was "past his prime" in 1992, then Kobe is clearly "past his prime" here in 2008. They were almost the same age at the time of their respective Olympics (29 and 32). Now in football, that's a huge difference, but for Basketball, that IS their prime.
I'd still vote the 1992 Dream team. They had a better overall team, and none of the players were truly past their prime except maybe Byrd, who's back issues started plaguing him around this time.

Kobe is past his prime. His prime was two years ago. Jason Kidd is past his as well. As for the rest of the team. None of them have reached theirs.

2008 Dream Team will have to be given +20 points from the very start, and still the 1992 Dream Team will win by 30 points.
Book it!

I saw these guys in person and the 1992 team hands down the best assembled ever.
Jordon Stockton Robinson, Barkley to name a few and of course Larry The Bird.
Best ever case closed.

I thought you knew a thing or two about basketball amigo.
Have you seen the players stats Before and After the 1992 medal game? Those players were hardly past their prime. The only 2 who would come close to that statement would be Magic and Bird due to injuries and whatever, but both could more than hold their own.
The current team was given fits by an Australian team without it's best player in pre-qualifying. What was the closest any team came to beating the Dream Team? And remember, the CIS team didn't have it's talent split up like in subsequent years.
Howard doesn't know how to play the post, Bosh doesn't know how to play the post and besides Lebron, Paul and Kobe, the current team doesn't have a singular difference maker. Those 3 are the only players on the current team, and maybe Wade since he seems to be back from his injuries, who can hold their own against any team.

Stop smoking crack. This team sucks. Jordan scored 40+ points in most games in the NBA, he would probably score like 75-100+ against all these other countries.
I think the team that wins the NBA finals on the year of the olympics should have to represent the U.S. in the Olympics. That would be the REAL team to beat, since they are a TEAM, not a hodge podge of random good players that usually play against each other.(its not baseball).

You must have smoked one ****ed up rock of crack my friend.
The 2008 team hasn't even won the gold medal yet.
The 1992 team would annihilate the 2008 team. Every single player on the 1992 team was a LEGEND, not just a great player. Jordan, Bird, Magic, Stockton, Malone, Barkley, Robinson.... these are the greatest players in the history of the NBA. 2008 has Kobe, LeBron (who has yet to prove himself) and that's it as far as legends go.

rofl tygerwoody, you are ludicrious
here is the dream team's record in the seeding stage:
116-48 127-83 103-70 122-81 111-68
And here it is in the knockout stage
