So, i was fed up of crysis crashing on me all the time and i remembered someone telling me once that if i have loads of ram (which i do) to turn the paging file off...so i did.
Crysis dont crash at all no more. played for hours lastnight and it ran perfect.
Why would turning that off cause the game to be stable?? It was on system managed so i just set it too no paging file.
I dont know if i should set my own one...i wouldnt know what to set it at. any advice appreciated :-)
Im running vista 64Bit and i have 4gig of ram.
Thanks

it helps because once turned off the system no longer access the hard drive
to find the data it's seeking. instead it stores all the data in RAM or
cache memory which is much much faster in terms of access time than seeking
from a hard drive.
this is probably why Crysis doesn't crash now, and with 4gb and vista 64 you
could probably turn that paging file to about 200-500 megs.

Thanks matey.
Is it possible the the system managed setting was using most if not all my ram for a paging file and thats what was causing it to crash?
Ill set it too 500 i think. wont need anymore than that will i?

What kind of crashes were you getting mate?

The game would play for about 5-10 mins then i would have to do a hard reset. i would have a constant looping sound otherwise. sometimes the game would crash right beore the next level or checkpoint...stuff like that.
I still have missing rear wheels on the cars too. im running version 1.2.1
Only thing im having trouble with now is the game sometimes resets back to minimsed screen. i have to set it to full screen now and again for some reason. maybe its my virus scanner or something :(
Ive stopped the crashes so im happy :D i can finally play the game now.
On a side note what the best graphics mod out there? rygel's looks really nice...might give it a go.

People like the CCC 2.2.1 one a lot. It looks decent, and has a small performance hit over high.

Rygel's mod is really great but it freezes the game on certain parts of some levels in my system :( maybe it's because I don't have enough video memory...
Rygel's mod can be used with CCC 2.21, Mster 3.01 or extreme quality mod.
I like CCC 2.21, it gives a cool warm lightning on some maps that I like (village, tank)

Well, it shouldn't crash the game. Maybe drive performance down due to the lack of texture space but to go as far as crash it... I don't know.

Well the game doesn't crash, but freezes for several seconds, and my hdd works a lot during these freezes...that's why I guess that it is caused by the lack of video memory of my graphic card. I've read similar issues in rygel's thread in crymod's forum.

my crysis only freezes for about a sec, when autosave happens

Only with Crysis? Otherwise data put in the pagefile may get corrupted leading to crashes.

BTW Niuk, I understand your pain to install the S1283 on that board... I have a same cooling solution (same circupipe) on my board... It's a bitch! :)

hehe thanks ^^
[off topic]Yeah I think I cut every part of my hands while trying to put it correctly...[/off topic]
Back on topic, here's the topic on crymod's forum where some people experienced the same problems than me with rygel's texture update (http://www.crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=26547&threadview=0&hilight=&hilightuser=0&page=5)
the only problem is you should really update the texturepak1, I've got a gtx280 but it's still eating all graphics memory which causees lagging, so updating it would be really nice
Please OPTIMIZE or do something with the Part01.pak files, when this is installed in crysis, i have extremely choppy frames, took Part01.pack out of crysis and everything is fine now.
I can barely play crysis with this mod lol..... I turn one second then it freezes a little bit then it loads and repeats. The texture size is probably to big for my comp to handle. I normally play on very high at 1920x1200 with smooth gameplay but this is just unbearable. Maybe 512mb on my 4870 isnt enough????? Maybe its just my computer...
etc... :(
Just an FYI. I have been running my rig with 4Gb of RAM and no page file for a good few months with no problems at all. That is until I got the new gfx cards and enabled AA on Crysis64. I started getting 'lack of memory' errors within a few seconds of starting a level. I re-enabled the page file and all is well again.
BTW this was in DX9 with all 'Very High' settings forced in the .cfg files.
vMemory usage would get to just over 2Gb and the game stopped. I can only assume Windows limits the vRam usage to half of the total in the system for any one program. Not 100% sure though.

Yup ,Same thing here with Crysis and also HL2 CM8.

afaik windows still needs to use the pagefile regardless of how much ram you have... afaik its always best to set it to windows managed rather than a custom size

You are the only person whose ever said that, Why do you say that?

ive actually read it many times that windows needs to use the page file regardless of how much ram you have... ive never had crysis crash on me and i always keep mine on system managed

It pretty much says that everywhere. :)

My paging file is off and has been since i started this thread and i havnt had one crash since then. i dont think this quote is correct that windows needs the paging file.

System managed? Seriously?
Ive never heard anyone recommend that, Maybe Vista does things better??.
System managed while running super high res texture packs would surely do some major pagefile fragmenting no?
Having just the minimum 200mb set on the OS partition is fine if you have enough ram ,4gb isn't enough so its back to 200mb on the os and 7000mb on a separate drive from Crysis/HL2 for me.
Speaking of which is there a pagedefrag for Vista64 yet or do you just run a command or something?

Rygel's texture mod demands I think 4 gigs minimum or be prepared for heavy page filing.
I noticed that the little green disk "loading" icon was flashing through 3 GPU benchmark runs. Tells me that it has a LOT of data to load.
Even with over 700mb video memory and 4 gigs of system memory availble with an X64 os, with page filing turned off, Vista will minimize crysis and tell me that the system is running low on memory. Does the same with HL2 cinematic mod 8 as well.
Turning on page filing and the errors go away... for me at least.

Does Crysis make use of readyboost or is pagefile more efficient?
Or what?

If the option is there to turn it off...Windows doesn't need it. That simple. I've been running everything with no page file, even DOOM 3 which says it needs a large paging file runs better without it on.

4 GB in x64 is not a lot of RAM. Windows uses about 2 GBs itself. You need 6 GB or more to turn it off in x64 or you'll run close to running out of RAM.
