I seem to remember a point system where gold - 3, silver - 2, and bronze - 1.
I always found that to be a fair method.

It is really hard to judge the individual value of the medals IMO. Many events are won or lost by mere hundreths of a second. Many are left to the whims of biased judges. Many events are team events which I would think would count more than individual (events except for team events in sports where nearly no other country plays them.)
Ah well. Team USA did nearly the same as they have in the past few Olympics with 30 or more of each type of medal. China did great with 100 medals 51 of which were gold.
My lasting impressions will be Phelps 8 golds (7 world records) in swimming and Bolts 100m run where he blew away the world record while running sideways and showing off for the last 10 meters. We may never see anything like that again.
Watching all those black people playing as Americans makes me think that the US is actually part of Africa!:|

Almost everyones ancestry in the U.S. is originally from somewhere else. What's the point you are trying to make? You singled out African/Americans, but not German/Americans, Japanese/Americans, Russian/Americans etc., etc. So what you said was fairly racial to many.

There was a tie-breaker rule already in place. If the television commentators did not do their home work, that's their fault.
The only fishy things I saw were in the boxing the martial arts competitions where the umpiring was pathetic to say the least.
I can't believe how much the medals depend on the verdict of woefully incompetent amateur "judges" who apparently all have glaucoma. I was almost happy that the Cuban martial artist kicked that dumbass ref in the face. He disgraced the sport just as much as the Cuban did by violating the ethics of the olympic charter.
