I recently reinstalled Jedi Outcast and I am having some horrible issues with it. The graphics look horrible and I get performance drops constantly while playing. My laptop should be more then enough to play the game. Is this an issue with Vista 64 and Nvidia?

The graphics look like its running on 16bit and the textures look all muddy.

EDIT
Nevermind about the graphics issue, seems like the game stayed at the resolution I choose once ingame... so was playing at 640x480 when I wanted 1600x1200. Performance still sucks...

Wow... that's an old game. it runs like a charm on my laptop which has a 1.8 Ghz Pentium M and FX 5200 64mb.

I would probably say it's vista. The game is old afterall. Is there some kind of compatibility mode that will allow you to run it like the game was in XP?

Tried but no luck. I remember someone mentioning a bug with Jedi Academy, Wonder if its the same bug affecting Outcast.

That was me... performance would dip when looking certain ways etc, after I finished the game putting up with that mid-2007, I read it was fixed in a driver update. Are you running recent drivers on the laptop?

Make sure you have the extension limiter enabled in the NVIDIA control panel. That fixes a lot of issues with older OpenGL titles.

also limit OpenGL version to what ever the game requires

Yeah, newest Vista x64 drivers available.

nekrosoft13, How do I limit the OpenGL version?

i'm using the latest drivers on nvidia's website and i also just recently went from xp to vista 64.

if extension limit doesn't help (i'm not using it), then maybe try setting conformant texture clamp to off.

however, i just recently installed 2 opengl titles, mdk 2 and fakk2 and they both run extremely well at absolute max settings, 1600x1200, nhancer with 16xs fsaa, and dxt3 instead of dxt1.

on a 8800 gt btw, memory @ 1780, core @ 650, fan speed 100%, load temps ~58-63 C, idle 41.

Man its so weird, fps changes so drastically... from 60 to 3 then to 30 then back to 2 and then 60.

nhancer, under compability, Reported OpenGL version

also set the driver extension limit, not sure what it has to be set to for that game, but if you google you might find it.

or just set it to same value as other older OpenGL game

There was this Glow setting that was very demanding... Try the game with that setting off. Can't remember the exact name...

Yeh disable Dynamic Glow, see if it makes a difference.

Glow only nuked Academy. Outcast was unaffected by the Dynamic Glow setting.

If I remember correctly it made my 5800 crawl... Or was it my GF3? :( Especially on the level where you get your lightsaber with the lighted buildings and all...

Issue fixed, It was a Vista 64 issue. No performance problems using Vista 32.

Outcast runs off a heavily modded quake 3 engine.

And? Does the Quake 3 engine have a known issue with Vista 64? Why then did no one mention it...

I reinstalled it, maybe play it until TFU comes out. It made me dizzy! :)

tfu....if only the game didn't need a $4000 PC to run it...

Yeah right... The game needs nowhere near that. BTW, review sites said the PS2 is almost identical to the X360/PS3 versions. The only difference is the graphics, the on-screen enemies and the destructible objects... The experience is largely the same... So, I now find it even harder to believe that this game couldn't be ported over to the PC... If the PS2 can handle it...

Appears to work fine for me on Vista 64.
I don't see any 'glow' setting in this game. Maybe that was just Jedi Academy.
