I'm looking for a air cooler for my Q6600 that will give me reasonable temps at 3.6+ ghz. I am looking to spend about 50 usd but am willing to go higher (about 100 max) can any one give me a recommendation?
thanks,

P.S. I am looking a this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019) currently.

You'll need to buy your own 120mm Fan for it though.

Do alot of high end air coolers on this socket require a backplate?
I was sorta interested in swapping out the bundled stock cooler, but I canīt be bothered to tear out the mobo and stuff to put in a backplate..

Are there any recommended ones that doesnt require a backplate to mount?

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon Vx doesn't need a blackplate, it uses the same mount mechanisms as Intel stock cooler. it does a good job at cooling too but not as much as the heatpipe tower designs that mount a side-blowing 120mm fan

Seconded, although I did spring for the optional backplate. Great cooler, equals the TRU for half the price.

in your opinion, do u think it is better that the TT big Typhoon?
Edit: ah it is looks like the Thermalright Ultra 120,so it should give better performance, does the fan comes with it? and thx for the advice, it looks like a decent cooler with an" affordable" price

Comes with the fan and all. Frostytech has this above the TRUE for their Intel HS... It's the second best cooler after the Sunbeam Core Freezer...

the OCZ Vendetta 2 is very good, also direct contact like the Xigmatek but performs betterer.

I use a Xigmatek myself, Backplate is a good idea as the push pins are nasty.

The problem with a lot of these idiot reviews is that they install the cooler with the mobo flat, not upright like most cases are,
Heatpipes work differently depending on which way they sit, The TRUE is good if you have a testbed but not so much if you use a tower case like most normal people do.

I know that pipes work different depending on their orientation. I was simply making a point that if it's good enough to rival the TRUE, which is recognized as one of the best coolers around, then it must be pretty good... :)

Well I'd say 3.6 is a little optimistic for any air cooler. I settled for 3.15ghz on my TR Ultra Extreme 120, as any higher and it gets too hot. You'd have a to pair a pretty big fan with it in order to get higher than that. I also have the Zalman 9700 on another Q6600, but I can't say as I have overclocked it to see how high I can go with that cooler.

My Tuniq Tower was holding my Q6600 at 3.36ghz & 1.32v under 70c with Prime95 running.

the vendetta 2 is a good cooler... i have it.. but it has the worst mounting system in the world... took me about 2 hours to get it clamped on... had to reapply the paste 3 times... the clamps dont stick properly and theres barely enough room to manouver

so sunbeam (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835207004) is better then the zalman. how does it mach up to the Thermaltake V1 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106102)? One guy says he gets 44c under load at 3.6. Revew #12

Same here with the Xigmatek push pins.

Is the TRUE backplate compatible with the OCZ also?, It is with the Xigmatek.

The Thermalright 120 is better. Have a look at the V1 reviews. It's huge, difficult to install and will not fit in anything but a Full Tower in most cases. Plus it just does cool as well as the 120 and Xigmatek. Have a look at most of the Q6600 owners here, a huge percentage has the 120, and we all rave about it. That must count for something. ::D:
