Nvidia Prepares For 40nm GPUs

VR-Zone has learned that Nvidia is moving on to 40nm process much quicker than expected. Nvidia is usually conservative when moving on to a finer process technology but seems like this time round, they are determined to get there ahead of AMD. This move is risky but probably Nvidia has done some serious simulation and prototyping to estimate the yield and stability of the TSMC 40G process technology. The first GPUs on 40nm process technology will be the mobile parts codenamed N10x, the successor to the current 65/55nm NB9x. Nvidia is expected to apply a die shrink to their desktop parts too to lower cost and thermal envelope so there might be a chance to see a GX2 solution for GT200.
55nm GT200 is coming in september, 40nm GX2 coming for holiday season? er, but hang on isn't 40nm a half node? maybe they mean 45nm????.. :captnkill:

Hasn't been the GT200b delayed ?

maybe it has been un-delayed
who knows, all these "reports" are nothing but rumors.

well it was rumored to be announced at Nvision, so no announcement would suggest a delay. 40nm GTX295x2 is a nice dream though :drooling:

Why? *puts on flame bait helmet* Dual GPU cards suck.

40nm before holiday season, as in christmas holiday? Yeah right.
Just wait till the Radon-Baconator-BFG-9000.

I wish NV would just lay out a clear roadmap so we know what's coming. Between this gx2 or 55nm refresh and CI7 my new build is on hold till oct/nov.
I need real info. :(

Well that would be nice, but they are still getting some spirited competition from AMD/ATI which would prevent releasing anything but an extremely generic time-line.

As I recall, TSMC is skipping 45nm and going straight to 40nm, but it wont happen until 1Q 2009, so dont count on holiday season.

Meh, more multi gpu crap?
They can sandwich cards all they want after they make GPUs scale better, share memory and be transparent to the display drivers.
Until then, I'm sticking to the strongest single-chip solution available.
I really hope they release a 55nm card that is faster than the GTX 280. The rumor that it was going to be a 55nm GTX 260 was really disappointing. There wouldn't even be much point in upgrading to that from my 2 year old 8800GTX.

I agree with all of you. After going back to single card I just love not having the hassle of sli profiles and bugs...now everything just seems to work and no fiddling.

I feel exactly the same way, hopefully they bring it out within the next 70 days so I can use BFG's step-up program and get it at a lower price. ;)

they need also gddr5.
they only need GDDR5 if they can do it with 512bit bus. if they fall down to 256bit bus there won't be much benefit.

Exactly,
With the actual config, if they lower the width of the memory bus, they will be lowering the ROPs count too, and this will affect the AA performance.
There is a discussion at B3D about this, and it seems like ATI's ROPs are stronger & smarter, and they can do more work with less bandwidth.
Lowering the memory bus width to put GDDR5 will create cheaper cards, but, they will perform worse with AA, and this is an area where the R770 has advantage atm.

looks like 40nm will be for a next generation 2009 part. forget GX2 ._.

Nvidia to go for 40nm

Nvision 2008: After 55nm
We've heard that Nvidia will, just as ATI, go for 40nm process. IT looks that TSMC wants to go from 55nm to 40 and they simply won't bother with the 45nm process for graphics.
Nvidia was late with transition to both 65nm and 55nm, as it got conservative and cautious since the NV30 debacle, and it looks that this 5-year old incident is still haunting Nvidia.
Nvidia wants to embrace 40nm in 2009 just as bad as ATI, and next year might be the first in history when we might have a smaller transistor on a GPU than we have one on a CPU.
Nvidia's 40nm GPUs are in the design phase and they should be ready for launch next year. 40nm naturally means higher clock for chips, more shaders and features, smaller die and lower TDP.
55nm GT200b will be the christmas season refresh, I guess.

I'll be about due for an upgrade to a DX11 card by then anyway!

How's the 9800gtx holding out? temp and shizz?
so it looks to me based on all the info so far that the only update will be a refresh of the gtx 260 with more shaders and rops to compete in the mainstream market with the 4870 since nvidia is moving directly to 40nm for next year? hopefully the new gtx 260 will be priced at $250 like the current version. A $750 Tri Sli setup with faster GTX 260s doesn't sound too crazy since it outperforms a $550 4870x2 and about equals the performance of (2) 4870x2 in CF, which is $1100, and you get CUDA supported apps, especially if you are into video editing, and physx supported games. and the upcoming 1.80 forceware drivers that will finally support multimonitor with sli enabled.

I don't have anything to monitor the temp, but nothing is able to slow it down thus far! It's one hell of a card!

Where can we download that? :D

Wow, the rivatuner thing never gets old to you. So he got mad over some things one of you said...the mere fact that he produces rivatuner makes him about infinity times more socially useful than you...let it go...

The fact that he got so angry over the comments of a few members and forced the issue asking for the banning of people means we or anyone on this site else has full right to rip into him and his pathetic EULA. His program is very good and very useful to tons of people but if he acts like an unreasonable idiot and inflames the issue then he shouldn't exactly expect his personal character to be deified here.
Anyway, there's little reason to take this thread completely off-topic.

To hell with making current cards better, i want a real next gen card already.
